GH2 Why GH2 over the canon equivalents?

Cool, it's always nice to see a well done short film regardless of camera, but it did look pretty darn good on the GH2.

I have the 7D, T3i, GH1 and GH2. The GH1 and GH2 are great for wide deep focus shots, I use them for my landscape, environmental type shots. My GH2 works great for telephoto shots on wildlife and birds.

The 7D and T3i are great for people shots, the inherent softness with just enough detail in the Canon's makes for great portrait type framing, and makes the subject pop against the OOF background.

+1

I keep wanting to sell my T2i but it can be useful for close-ups/portrait shots as you said. Although, i would like to see the Leica/Panny 25 in a same type of shot and apply MBL
to 'soften' it up. This is the only area where i would consider using a T2i but i think it can be reproduced in GH2. For Landscape/Nature, the GH2 is hands down amazing when it comes to picking up extra
details. The leaves and branches on trees, details in rock formations , hair/fur on animals, etc. The Tele-Extender is very handy. And i've found the stills ability far greater then what most people have said with good lenses.

Hi,

I´ve just completed a little project, where I had to match footage from a 60D and my hacked GH1.
Canon footage seems always to be yellow-ish. Years ago I used a Canon camcorder, can´t remember the model. Also yellow-ish.
That yellow can´t be whitebalanced away, also not in post. I think it lurkes more in the highlights than mid tones.

I used Colorista 2 to match the footage and succeeded (I could still tell the difference, hardly though) to my and the customers satisfaction (who never realized it anyways).
I was in a hurry, so with time I am sure it can be done properly.

And a GH2 is on its way to me :)

Well, until 15 minutes ago, this was password protected. The director doesn't want it to get seen too much yet. I un-passworded it since I thought it would be helpful in this thread. I didn't run sound, so I'm not sure on the mic. It was a basic boom mic, though.
That´s really awesome! But if I were you I´d share the password here rather than unprotecting the video itself. Just a thought :)

http://www.mediafire.com/?7d4do0acku4yd08 -- here is a Janky Lowlight GH2 Hack Clip, just toying around.

I am PRETTY sure this is ISO 800, but it also might be 400--I deleted the actual MTS and such so I don't have that data, just the ProRes4444. It's a very well compressed clip, though, and should show about 85 percent of what's actually there in the original file. I can see a difference between this and the 400MB ProRes4444 file. It's a bit more detailed (sharper) and cleaner for sure. No color correction, no denoise, no nothing but export.

As you can see, there isn't ANY FPN (fixed patterned noise), and banding is minimal. I'm still pretty amazed that this is coming out of a tiny, cheap camera setup...

For sure, the details are:

Smooth -2 -2 -1 -2
PL Lens + Zeiss 28mm/T2.1 @ 2.1 (I stop down and open up again at the end)
Driftwood seaQuake hack for 176mb/s
30mb/s Sandisk Extreme from Best Buy (29.99)
Hot Rod Cameras PL Mount Setup

And obviously, street lamps.

This is what I consider lowlight. I'd have the same sort of illumination indoors or I wouldn't be shooting, so I can live with this noise.

I have an ETC mode clip from this same moment that I'll upload.

Some have successfully matched Canon with GH2 footage. I mean, can it really be any harder than matching DVX/HVX footage with Canon (which plenty of folks have done here)?
Well, I know this is OT but to be honest...HVX footage and 7D/T2i should match up perfectly well IMO.

I'm almost set on the GH2. The features I originally wanted when looking at DSLR's are there. The ONLY reason I swapped to the T2i was because of the FPN. It was the only camera in the same price range at the time getting rave reviews. I hated giving up my swivel LCD that the GH1 had.

Hmm... well, honestly man... I could shoot just about any camera (not film) that I wanted too for this next feature, budget not really an issue, and I'm about ninety percent sure that I'm going to shoot GH2 and use the 5D MKii for BTS video and stills alongside my iPhone 4.

Indeed... I am choosing the hacked GH2 over an Epic setup or RED MX again.

The best thing you could do for yourself is order one, hack it, and throw some nice glass on it. Play with the camera yourself, see if you enjoy it and if not, get rid of it. Trust in the fact that there's someone else that would love to buy it off of you.

Also, check out the file I uploaded. That's what I consider lowlight, and would be the lowest amount of ambient I'd ever shoot with. It handles that situation well in and out of ETC mode.

Thanks for all the input. I was actually looking around vimeo today at GH2 footage.. and saw SUPERSEEDS... looks amazing.

Do you always convert the hacked footage to ProRess4444 or do you usually do another flavor of ProRes?

I think, for any major major projects (feature or commercial) I'd export 422LT 1080 offline and then conform to DPX for a DaVinci Session.

If I were just going to finish right there in FCP, I think 422HQ is fine. I have been working with 5DtoRGB > 4444 for testing so that I know exactly what I'm getting in the process.

Thanks, man. The blog's in the User Film's section.
Can you spot the unhacked GH2 footage in the trailer amidst the RED MX footage? xP

Nope. I assumed it was all GH2

Kholl, could you detail your import process a bit more?
