GH2 Why GH2 over the canon equivalents?

RTS.SOMEONE
Great post! And honestly with this "digital stock" idea Kholi just presented I think the best thing you can do is do what they do on major features: audition cameras. You can ask us what we think but we are going to give you "our" opinions on it. It's best for you to get access to a gh2 (I believe you said your friend already has a t3i so you can hopefully borrow his) and pit their images against each other. If it comes down to it you can order a gh2 from b&h and return it after the test or keep it if you like it and all you would have lost is the price to send the cam back in the mail. Idk just my .02

I agree with this. Was just hoping there was some tell tale sign that would jump out at me just from watching other people's work with the cameras. Unfortunately there aren't a whole lot of examples of narrative work with the GH2 just yet. At least not in the genre I shoot in. Seeing a bunch of daylit shots doesn't help someone who shoots primarily in low light using alot of horror style lighting.

Ahh man, that HDMI out on the GH2 is a big deal for me.. That in itself might be the deal breaker.

I would HIGHLY encourage you to pickup a GH2 from B&H and try it out. I own two and plan on purchasing a third one in January (still have my HMC150 for events/straight shooting/glidecam work).

I do not share the opinions of others in thinking that the camera is 'too sharp' because I LOVE a sharp camera especially with tons of bokeh. I haven't even bothered to hack mine yet. I stress the 'yet' part because I have been blown away by the hacks over the past months... I've just been too dang busy to hack and have fun with a pet project. Its a good position to be in, but I can't wait to shoot some beautiful winter footage!

You will not be disappointed with a GH2 unless you care about other people seeing the 'Canon' brand. This is very likened to the PC vs Mac debate. I have worked with companies who were SHOCKED that I did not shoot on Canon equipment, and that I strongly dislike Apple's OS. I am thrilled with Windows 7, CS5, Magic Bullet Suite 10 and a little army of GH2s.

I love my GH2.

Well this just in.. Thanks to A1ex who apparently saw this thread.. my T2i is functioning. It turns out, its a bug where the camera starts with no display.. doh!

I pulled it out of the box i was sending back to canon, and voila it powered right up using his suggestion.

I'm strongly considering selling it and getting a GH2 after seeing more videos and doing research.

Tell a1ex to get a GH2 as well. I want Magic Lantern over here. ;)

the banding is gone

the banding is gone

Hi,

I've worked with the stock GH1 for 2 years and now work with a stock GH2 since 8 months and there is no comparaison, really...

The horrible vertical banding is gone, the noise on high ISO is much lower and more filmic and there is much less problems with panning. More, you can have the tremendous benifit of full HDMI out...

so am I correct in that the GH2 has full hd monitoring capability while recording via hdmi?

edit: someone already answered this question.

I have the 7D, T3i, GH1 and GH2. The GH1 and GH2 are great for wide deep focus shots, I use them for my landscape, environmental type shots. My GH2 works great for telephoto shots on wildlife and birds.

The 7D and T3i are great for people shots, the inherent softness with just enough detail in the Canon's makes for great portrait type framing, and makes the subject pop against the OOF background.

I think it is in the 25p from the new firmware, but I am not sure. I was really looking into the hdmi, but since the driftwood hack I don't think it would be that important, the difference are minimal from test done on the 24p fixed ones by lpowell and it was on old hacks. If you have the possibility I would advice you to try it, you might see more noise in some way because the hack will not smear it, but you can eventually clean it very well and preserve much more detail. You can watch these two videos to get an idea of the low light capabilities of the gh2. I would not use the 10000 iso but the 3200 looks very good.

yeah this stuff is very impressive. regardless of what I decide to do.. there's 2 features I really want..

1. flip out LCD (my t2i doesn't have it)
2. HDMI monitoring (again doesn't have it)

honorable mention features that I like but can live without..

3. mounting cinema lenses like PL mount.

T2i doesn't have any of that, or at least the third would require destructive surgery.

GH2 is actually a bit more of a winner for me because of number three.

just got my GH2 (699 deal like everybody else), here are some other things you might like:

I am pleasantly surprised by how good the EVF is. I never used my T2i viewfinder at all and I definitely think this will see some usage.

More intervals in ISO are very welcome and the ability to set custom white balance temp without Magic Lantern is outrageously helpful.

Also I haven't seen you mention Ex. Tele Mode. Being able to double your focal length (without losing quality) is pretty nifty.

By the way... on the EVF...

I like using it a LOT more than using the LCD.

I covered the ETC feature in my blog post as well. Definitely an awesome feature and VERY usable.

I had a T2i and the aliasing ruined many a good shot. You could not "fix it in post".
I bought a GH2 and did side by side comparisons.... The T2i went up for sale that night.
I have 2 GH2's now and love them.

You should check out the Sony NEX5n. It's the best low light DSLR that I have used (T2i, 5D, GH2, GH1, 7D and some others), which you said was important to you. It also has an adjustable LCD. It's not flip out like the GH2 and the T3i but you can pop it out and rotate it down and up. It also has full 1080p monitoring. It also has 1080 60p which looks great. It definitely has some problems though. It over heats for me about once a day, and it has a similar gamma shift problem that the GH2 has. It's also not nearly as sharp as the GH2 and I'd say it has a lower dynamic range than the Canons. I just ordered the GH2 and will see how I like it with the hack compared to the NEX5N and 5D.

Hey wanted to chime in here and encourage you to buy this camera... NOW. It's at an all time low price, and you will not lose a dime if you decide to resell it on ebay. Having said that, coming from both a 7D and a 5D, I can promise you especially for narrative work and getting a "cinematic" image, you are you going to absolutely love this camera. This is something you only figure out after using it for a few hours. What kind of primes do you currently have? I wouldn't necessarily recommend Panasonic lenses if you are going for "film look" and don't be fooled by the majority of videos shot on the panasonics'. Since you already have m42 lenses, you're already home my friend.

Just look at the texture, the feel, the overall cinematic quality of this camera in relatively low light. I never achieved anything quite like this with my 7d or 5d.

If he OP wanted to see a narrative GH2 film in the horror genre, here's one shot for Halloween. I shot this on an unhacked GH2. Granted, this was done for laughs, but maybe the OP will find it helpful.

Wow, I can't believe you didn't at least enter in a few tags for this video... at least "gh2"... this deserves to be seen by WAY more than 41 people, this is pretty amazing. What kind of mic did you use? excellent job!

Well, until 15 minutes ago, this was password protected. The director doesn't want it to get seen too much yet. I un-passworded it since I thought it would be helpful in this thread. I didn't run sound, so I'm not sure on the mic. It was a basic boom mic, though.
