GH2 Why do we need a GH3? Isn't the GH2 enough? What should Panasonic do for GH3?

@TheDingo One of the widest they make (if it accepts EF-S) is the 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5. I think a lot of people already own that (I know I am very happy I do, especially for stills).

Anyway, 10mm with the GH2 gives an FOV wider than 20mm, and on a BlackMagic Cinema it's somewhere around 22.8mm, apparently.

So you could still get a nice wide - wider than 24mm. Just not "ultra-wide".

Doesn't this do the Ef to pl job? Whats wrong with this adapter?:

http://kcwtechnica.com/shop/pl-mount-to-canon-eos-7d-5d-mark-ii-adapter-v2a/

And what about this regarding pl glass on the magic cam: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.398258513557700.106898.118532781530276&type=3

That adapter only allows certain glass, unfortunately. I'd be looking to use Master Primes or Ultra Primes (both sets have a 10/T1.3), so they wouldn't work.

AS far as those other PL zooms, they're EF mounted. The Zeiss zoom they're using is the LWZ and it comes with an EF mount or Pl mount by request. xD They're trickin' people!

The problem isn't really the PL mount, but the space required to house the rear element. Only a certain few PL sets can play before you have to go and gut something.

I'm totally sympathetic with some of Kholi's concerns. When you're actually shooting with actors, the last thing you want is a freeze-up or some glitch to worry about. The ISO-bug thing isn't a huge deal for me, but the lock-ups from trying to squeeze the absolute best quality out of the cam are problematic. I'm personally a proponent of reliable patches (like FlowMotion or Quantum 100, but it's been a while since I've messed around with it or the new version).

Another benefit to the gh2 that I'm thinking is rarely addressed is the affordability of shooting some narrative fiction scenes with two cameras. This can be a real efficiency saver in some scenes--like dialogue at a table b/w two characters. It also can enhance performance, and bring out certain moments that you might otherwise not get. Of course, you'll want two camera ops and two boom mic ops in that situation. But still... it's tempting.

I should really back off of the patch and go with something like Quantum 100 for interviews... might end up sticking it on a card and leaving it there for that purpose.

I do agree about the multicam, as well. If Magic Cam wasn't so close to being released we'd buy another GH2, because we use a pair every time we go out to shoot and by now, we could've bought two or three extra cameras from the rental rate alone. xDDD

That abel link has 2/3" as the B cam comparison of a 10mm and is not representative of the magic cam. There is a drop down menu for the magic cam and it is considerably wider FOV than 2/3".

And, I just read that site... this:

lease do realize you are planning to use a lens designed for motion pictures on a camera designed for still photos. Field Of Focus between cinema lenses and DSLRs are very much different. We do not manufacture lenses (yet), so also please realize whether the lens of your choosing will focus or not to the markings on the barrel is completely determined by the lens manufacturer, not us.

Is REALLY funny. Basically, they knew that they couldn't create an adapter with the proper back focus, so they're blaming it on glass that's ALWAYS accurate no matter which cinema camera you put it on.

If you get the back focus right, they'll all focus to marks.

@mico I know. Check the measurements I gave. I switched the A cam to a 5D and the B Cam to the Blackmagic - they both have drop-down menus.

@questech Okay, I found some of the original MTS files from a comparison I did a month ago. These are all high ISO shots in very low light and clearly show how much better Canis Majoris Night can be vs Stock Firmware 1.1.

I added the links in a hurry to my GH2 Hack Reference Page - they are towards the end of it.

Edit: All 19 comparison files from 2012-05-02 are up now. If any of the links have issues, let me know.

Here Are the Results of My Tests!

Here Are the Results of My Tests!

Thank You for the Effort Per Lichtman!

OK, Thanks to all of you I am using my Google/Gmail account in ways I never considered.

I just uploaded a zip file that contains many of my newly shot test clips that should prove my point, or at the very least, help you to see what I see.

Once you download and extract the zip, please read the ReadMe file contained therein before you watch the clips. It will give you some background and logic as well as explaining the files contained and the naming nomenclature.

Please let me know if you can't download the file so that I can figure out why (new to using Google Documents).

As you will see, I purposely shot a high contrast scene at low exposure so that it would reproduce the areas that cause the most noise problems for My GH2.

Please let me know what you think :)

The only reason I'd buy a GH3 is if I was cashed up a lot more than I am now (which means I've broke) and it offered a bundle of features that exceeded that of the GH2. I own a GH1 now, I will be upgrading to GH2 in the next two or so months... and I really don't have any intention of buying/upgrading to the GH3 (if it ever comes) unless the GH2 limits me, and the GH3 is significantly better.

I'm really only looking for two features that I believe the GH2 has at least one of.

1080/50p (or 60p for NTSC shooters)
HDMI monitoring during recording.

Other things that would be nice, seeing as I'd like to use the GH2 for photography... is the ability to take long exposures at low ISOs without getting colour noise in my blacks. It's a major pet peeve I have with the GH1. Less noise in video modes, the ability to push to higher ISO's without muddying up the footage would also be welcomed. Thats all I ask for. Would it be worth upgrading to? If I had a grand to spare, then yes... definitely.

Most of you are ENG or Film shooters, I'm an events and amateur film maker... I just want something that gives me the ability to shoot at HD resolution with interchangeable lenses and makes my images look as useable as possible (as in, less noise and ability to push the image a bit higher in brightness with the kit lens). I don't expect my camera to work miracles, just to make me glad I bought it :)

Hey Dan,

I have used my GH2 with the stock firmware (unhacked) with it connected to an HDMI monitor and it worked in every mode for me, no problems at all.

I read somewhere that some of the hacks mess with that capability, but I don't know... it's just hear/say coming from me.

I don't have a GH1, so my opinion may not impress you, but from what I've read, the GH1 may be better with noise than the GH2, so buyer beware, and check it out yourself.

Good Luck!

Thanks guys. I don't know how often ETC mode will be used in my line of work, but handy to know. Compared to the GH1 and HDMI monitoring, the GH2 is kicking butt there already.

Cheers guys! I definitely will be going for a GH2... I have my heart set on it :)

If I had one request for the GH3, it would be film-like motion cadence. I'm not a big pixel peeper, but the video-like motion distracts me.

Bumping this a little :)

I have a sony ex1r. My next cam will either be a gh3 or the gh2, depending on the updates the gh3 will have.

What i'd like to see (in priority order):
-A very good noise performance in lowlight (ex1r is useless at night).
-Flippable lcd.
-1080p 60fps.

After Zacuto's test, i fell in love with the gh2 (altough i'm not forgetting all the lights and the 80k$ lens it had :)). Cheap, compact, better dof than ex1r. I want it mostly for glidecam work. Instead of spending 2k$ for a vest, getting a gh2 or 3 seems like a much better idea.

Hopefully it will be out soon :)

Lenses make a big difference!

I have been doing a lot of testing and I would say that my wishlist has changes a bit:

#1 Noise reduction at the sensor level
#2 SDI-HD Out !
#3 GH2 Trade-In Policy
#4 Image Stabalization In the Camera Body - Not the Lense

And of course an alloy chasie and bigger body would be cool too (room for XLR inputs - if they had better pre-amps)..

Again, not true.
