Hello TheDingo, thanks for the feedback!
Yes, more noise for sure, but I haven't noticed any exposure penalty. The lens is actually pretty cool and is a good tool for certain shots. I also have the Lumix 14mm - 140mm as well as several Nikon lenses, both zooms and primes. Using the C-Mount lens actually triggered my quest for answers because ETC Mode does induce much more noise.
That's very cool, I'm glad you are having such good experience with it!
What I don't see (from what I've looked at) is where's the big improvement?
The footage I have watched has had all kinds of subtle imperfections, and I just can't see how it's any better than the stock firmware. And the added expense for memory cards isn't that much, as you pointed out, but the point I have been trying to make all along is; if the stock firmware produces images just as good or even real close to the hacked firmware, why take the storage space hit??
Now I already know you disagree with my last statement, and I am not saying you are wrong by any means. I am just saying that I haven't seen the improvement that everyone is talking about.
However, with all of the people that share your opinion, I can't help but to think that I am missing something... I'm just trying to figure out what that is!
I own a production company we use high-end gear for paying gigs, this GH2 is for my personal use and to make YouTube videos, but my next personal camera is going to either be the Black Magic Camera (my partner is lobbying for that one) or the FS100 or preferably the FS700, so I'm right with you on that one!
I used a 64Gb SanDisk Extreme 45MB/s for my hack tests and I still got an error (not fast enough) with a couple of the patches, and I only shot stationary scenes.
Well, I'm probably a little older than you, but I too have been in business for a while. I started out as a photographer and in 1980 I started my first production company. So let's both agree that we have good eyes
I will find the footage in question and provide links. But the problem that I have with the footage I viewed, is that it must have been compressed at least once, and the imperfections that I'm seeing could be related to that. I did download some footage from Vimeo that eluded to the fact that it was original footage, but GH2s don't put out AVIs or MOVs, so that couldn't have been true.
I would love to see some actual footage right out of the camera that shows this quality improvement, because so far there's just no evidence of it that I could actually see with my own two eyes that supports that. And don't take that the wrong way, I just haven't seen the results you and many others are referring to
I have seen my tests and my unhacked firmware produced a cleaner picture, with less noise than any of the patches I tested.
BTW because I was only concerned with quality in ETC Mode at the time that I ran my tests, all of my tests were in ETC Mode.
I certainly wouldn't hold this position if I hadn't spent hours investigating, after all, we all have businesses to run and I'm up against some deadlines as we speak.
I would love to become a convert. If you have access to, or know where I can download some MTS files of high quality hacked footage, I'd be grateful... even better hacked and the same exact scene unhacked.
Thanks!
I know that you are using a C-mount lens and have to use ETC mode to get proper coverage of the sensor, but I think this is HUGE mistake, as ETC mode cripples the low-light and low-noise ability of the GH2 sensor. This is why I have never bothered with ETC mode and also why I won't go near C-mount lenses.

My experience has been the exact the opposite of what you are describing.
I've been using the Driftwood Quantum 100 ( 100 Mbps I-Frame ) patch for a few months now ( I've shot 2 Indie films, a dozen 10-30 minute interviews, a classical concert, a sports infomercial, and another Indie film is in the pipe to shoot in about 6 days ), and I am as happy as can be with my GH2. I get beautiful, sharp, low noise images ( 160 - 800 ISO ) using SanDisk 64 GB SDXC UHS-I 95 MB/sec memory cards that enable me to shoot up to 84 minute takes. Using the Quantum 100 patch and these memory cards my GH2 works flawlessly. First time, every time.
That's very cool, I'm glad you are having such good experience with it!

I do agree that image noise becomes a problem once you go past 800 ISO ( I will use 1600 ISO if I have absolutely no other options ), which can be cleaned up with NeatVideo to some degree, but if it's a paying job and I need affordable low-light performance then I would rent a Sony HS-100/HS-700 camera. ( if the GH3 doesn't pan out this year, then I will look at buying a HS-700 body )

Yes, the SanDisk cards are expensive, but with just two 64 GB cards, I can continuously shoot and dump to a laptop all day.

...I'm sorry Questech, but you are going to have to illustrate this opinion with some direct examples, as I really have no idea what you are talking about. ( I'm a professional studio photographer with 20+ years experience, and have been shooting video for 10+ years, so I have a pretty good eye too )
