Art is the "painting" itself, not the brushes or the canvas you used to make it.
With noise in the shadows, banding in the skies and the 20 pixel high band I get in low light situations there is no way I could use my 2 GH2's for pro productions. I need to be as close to 100% reliable as possible. It can't just yield good results "often", it needs to be able to deliver clean output I can count on all the time. By that same token however, I cannot say that RED is much better. Which is why I don't own one - yet. I think P. Bloom was absolutely right to have reservations. When I go on a long shoot, I cannot simply turnaround and say "Sorry, the camera just stopped because the hack was unable to deal with all the detail in this scene" for instance, or geez maybe that's a bug RED hasn't dealt with yet. For most clients time is money.
What would I want in a GH3? Clean output I can count on. No banding, mysterious lines, noisy shadows at low iso's, and maybe a little less skew. I think that's reasonable don't you?
I want the price to be higher I would be willing to pay 3-5,000 if the GH3 morphed into a professional tool with a global shutter etc. Under $1,000 is too low to expect any major improvement, hell even the GH1 cost more than that when it came out, hellooooo inflation. There are plenty of options if you want a flawed camera for the web, film school etc. The panasonic wouldn't have to worry about its high end line if it ups the price and spec as well.
If you want to pay more..i would split the GH into the regular GH3 and either GH3X or a different name.
The way Panny has developed and grown this cam has been perfect. For Sub 1K, i hope there is 1080/60, improved LCD, and codec.
Beyond that would be awesome. But i would make it an entirely different line if the price-point is 3-5K range. That is basically AF100.
I saw this quote in another thread:
And my first thought was "but isn't the GH2, especially with the hack, already enough, do we really need a GH3 at all?". So I decided to start a thread about this, because I'm interested in other people's perspectives.
My idea is that the GH2 - with the hack - is enough for narrative work. Could the GH3 deliver more? Sure, but isn't that always the case? The point is not "can the next camera be better than the last one", because that's kinda how things are in technology. Rather, the point is that a given camera does all you need right NOW, then there really isn't a compelling reason for an upgrade. Maybe if you didn't have a GH2, you might buy a GH3, but if you already have a GH2, would you really feel the need to buy the GH3? Because, actually, no way can Panasonic deliver the capability that the hack has - and that was confirmed by a Panasonic rep, who in essence said that they are aware of the hack, but they can't duplicate it, because they have to hew to the limits of the AVCHD codec limitations, and can't simply arbitrarily change stuff. So if you get the GH3, it may very well be worse than a hacked GH2 (and for that matter the GH3 might be overall worse than the GH2 anyway - Panasonic did that before, like the GF3 being worse than the GF2), and you'll have to wait for the GH3 to get hacked (if possible) to even come close to the hacked GH2.
So the question is: isn't the GH2 enough for narrative work? Is there something about the GH2 that's a deal-breaker for you? Sure, we'd all like this or that better on the GH2, but is there anything that TODAY you say "wow, I can't use the GH2 for narrative work, I must wait to see if they fix it in GH3". So - not "nice to have", but "essential". And the second question is what would you want from Panasonic for the GH3 - assuming that Pana is listening to dvxuser, which I think they do in a way - what do you think the GH3 should have? But please, if you make a list keep in mind two things:
1)Make it realistic! Don't ask for stuff that just can't be done technologically in a small package
2)Don't ask for something that's going to push the retail MSRP price above $1K, or what it is now
Nah, no thanks - there are now alternatives that are proven to be as good/better...

Come along now, don't be shy.
I'm no brand victim. I will buy...
Please name these sub $1000 alternatives and list their proven matching / superior attributes.
GH2 not good enough, Red not good enough. OMG are you imax! Remember, it's not the hammer, its the nails!
Well, the last time I mentioned an alternative my post was summarily removed by a GH2 disciple.
However, if I can offer a small clue, 'Seven is closer to heaven, and makes GH2 appear like poo'
Can ya dig it? (as they used to say on Radio 1 when I was a young lad...)
On a serious note - much of the GH2 hysteria (and, imo, it *is* hysteria) is promulgated by a retinue of brain-dead cultists who know no other mantra than, 'GH2 is the finest camera ever to be sent down to earth from the presence of Lord Krishna'
Well (and you can burn me alive for my heresy) it ain't.
The GH1 hack was a great step forward, and it freed a crippled camera from some of the constraints applied by Panasonic.
The GH2 hack, in comparison is (I'm afraid) something of a damp squib.
There's a distinct hierarchy involved.
The lofty top tier is occupied by a foreign gentleman who seems to believe that his undoubted coding ability endows him with the right to be as rude as possible.
Then comes a lesser tier - 'Priests' of the cult, if you like, who use the foreign gentleman's work to come up with increasingly bizarre and outlandish 'patches' - some of which appear to actually damage the camera!
They hang onto the foreign gentleman's coat tails in a an attempt to accrue some of the glory for themselves - but they are not the authors of the Holy Writ, merely scribes and pen-pushers who reassemble the holy words into any form that might bring them applause.
Then, at the bottom, are the faithful. They who worship the Foreign Gentleman and the scribes - gravely discussing topics that they, clearly, have no comprehension of, and which might as well have been imparted to them in Swahili.
Bottom line? - all this worship is extremely puzzling, directed as it it is at a cheap plastic camera that can't take a decent low light image to save its own soul....
What!
It would be interesting to see a high end cam like that. I'm not sure how Panasonic would feel about it. Its probably all about price point. Isn't what your suggesting kind of like an AF100. Isn't that their idea of what your suggesting. A Pro large sensor camcorder with waveform/overcrank/ND built in/ etc? Maybe they should be improving that camera... in order to fulfill your/our needs?
