Why do so many pros still choose Canons over Panasonics?

Yeah! Its a plug alright, but its not repeated on his buy comparison blog. Don't get me wrong i mean heck im not saying because Bloom might infer one model or the other - that its the final word lol. Just that in the face of a presumption that Canon users are just idiots for not buying this particular panny, it just well... doesn't float with an experienced user Bloom's recommendation. Yep he does in the video recommend the gh2 for newbies in video - heck so would i! I mean even if the canon 5d mk2 was better would u really recommend it to someone starting out in video over a much more affordable gh2 - of course not!

That comparison blog was written before he used the GH2. BTW you would have to be blind to not see that the GH2 has better quality video than the 5D MKII and that is the reason why many are dumping their 5D MKII's for the GH2. To get any usable DOF in low light with the FF 5D MKII you have to close down the aperture but then loose the light gathering ability of the fast lenses like the 50mm F1.2. The GH2/ Voigtländer Nokton 25mm f/0.95 combo kills the 5D MK II with 50mm F1.0/1.2 lens in low light.

Bloom is unequivocally a bokeh guy; of course he would prefer the full size sensor. He uses a lot of cams, though.

I agree with tflak. Most people are simply more familiar with Canons and have heard all the buzz the past couple of years about the 5d and 7d. Like anything else it will take time before the mainstream "professional" community switches over. Canon has had a several year head start in terms of marketing, but with time more and more people will start recognizing the alternative options.

I nearly bought a 60d about a month ago only because I wasn't educated on the GH2 well enough. Once I did my reading and test shooting, there was absolutely no comparison. Since buying the camera I've also introduced it to several producers/DP's that had been considering going with a 5d or 7d package for upcoming projects. After introducing them to the GH2, each and every one of them has rethought their decision to go with Canon.

I've also now used my GH2 on several professional shoots, commercial and corporate. My crew and clients were extremely satisfied with the performance of the camera. Especially in comparison to the 5D which I've also used on several recent studio shoots.

I have to agree with you. We all keep talking about losing potential jobs if you don't have a 7D/5D. Well, I can say in our experience that ALL of our clients come to us saying: "I want that!!". They simply don't care what we show up with, they just want what they have seen in our portfolio. And when we show up with a GH13 and GH2, they simply don't care, or at most, they are curious to see what that "little thing" can do or has done (watching our previous productions). Yes, we do have two comlpetely rigged out EX1s, but sometimes they stay in the bag. It is about your reputation, NOT about the gear. If you don't have a 7D and you need it for a job because "they absolutely want it", rent it. IMO, GH13 and now the amazing GH2 are simply superior tools for video (and you'll be surprised to see what ISOs the GH2 can shoot at!).

with due respect to Philip Bloom's body of test videos, who really gives a mutt's nuts what he prefers?

...a personal real life analogy: I could have married a Canon, but i married a Panasonic instead. She's perfect for me, and an internet celebrity can't convince me otherwise.

Because he's a very experienced professional with access to test resources that a lot of us don't have access to, and he posts what info he can for the explicit reason of helping us buy what may work best for us and our budgets?

Wow I buy his dvd and its like infomercial! He sell lots of stuff. So maybe be careful about what he say to buy! He is saleman.

It's amazing to me the level of cynicism there is directed at this guy when he's done so much for the DSLR filmmaking community and has helped to get these little wonders accepted professionally more than almost anyone else. Have you ever thought that he probably gives opinions on what to buy because he's constantly getting asked by people what they should buy? Just like the opinions on what to buy on this very forum. It's like the guy isn't supposed to have an opinion.

point taken, and i wasn't bloom-bashing...i was just trying to understand the whole idea, but access to gear isn't always an immediate possibility, hence the need to observe someone who does.

but there are some people who think a guy like Bloom is the video messiah, and that worries me :-) i would just want to drink with him.

Yeah, he just seems like a cool guy going out of his way to provide info and strengthen the community. But in the end you gotta decide for yourself with your own eyes and budget.

Where are all these GH2 videos that are much better than all the 5D videos?

I can't find much on Vimeo.

The GH2 is not even available at B&H and the 5D MK II has been out since 2008 so give it time but anyone who has looked at native GH2 1080p24 files and compared them to native 5D MKII files could see that Canon is not even close .

Id have to be blind? Bliiiiiind - like on my knees, scrambling in the dirt, clutching at my face screaming 'oh god i can't see... im blind... just bliiiiind because i might not come to the same 'obvious' conclusion as a guy on an internet forum called joe1946.... bliiiiiind'

Or how about... maybe not. I am in a very fortunate place, i havent made an investment in any of these cams yet and god forbid i develop the emotional attachment some obviously have. What I will say, is that i have not as yet (understandably due to its release time) seen gh2 films of the standard we've seen produced with the canon 5 mk2.

Thats not to the detriment of the gh2 as yet, but for some ott kids with their pants in a twist - declaring that a particular cam.... a consumer first buy for many in fact... is so great that you'd have to be stupid etc to not realise it well, its silly.

Only on this level of equipment could you have such silly discussions hehe! And while i mention you in my wee joke joe its not personal really - its awesome that you find the gh2's superiority so obvious. I just don't appreciate the hyperbole attitude, when there is such a credible different of opinion, that my god... we should appreciate and respect.

You'd be silly if you call the Voigtlander lens on GH2 silly. In Japan, a list of top 10 the most satisfied cameras has 5 mirrorless bodies. Of course GH2 made on the list. This mirrorless movement is a real threat to Canon, and GH2 is the current technology leader in the mirrorless realm. More pros will start using GH2 for their production works.

Nah you'd just be one of the most geeky self opiniated camera types which poses an even greater threat to humanity than the peoples liberation mirrorless movement does to Canon! ;)

+1 to the thread kill!

+1 to closing the thread. I think it's run its course.

While it is hyperbole, perhaps, to say you'd have to be *blind* to think the 5D II looks better than the GH2, it would NOT be hyperbole to say "you'd have to be 'deliberately ignoring reality' to say the 5D II looks better than the GH2."
