Why do so many pros still choose Canons over Panasonics?

I think its mainly marketing and history. When i get the GH2 (soon), my challenge is to match or surpass the stills/video quality of my 550D. Video-wise, i'm pretty sure that won't be hard. Stills-wise, i need to get a Voightlander. But i'll start with the 14-140 and post results. I like the 550D especially with the new hack. I don't look at it as an either/or solution. I think they work well together. But most people don't know about Panasonic unfortunately and thats their loss.

It's not the camera and anyone who's confident enough knows this... I''ve put out some photos and video from the GH2 and people are now lookign to get this camera and it's mojo.... but it's still the artist and who cares about what people use... It's just another tool and I've moved from one to the next... I also tend to cover my logos expecially on the still cameras..... I don't want to attack the talkers and such...

Just let the end results speak for themselves...

What do you reckon about Philip Blooms preference for the 5dmk2? I was curious about that - because facts on the ground (for video at least) seem to favour the gh2

Different people and different projects will always have their own needs when it comes to the tools used to accomplish the job. Some people who are used to canon but who cant stand the poor resolving power and audio/monitoring shortcomings of their Canon DSLRs will switch to Panasonic once they are more available. Some people will stick with Canon because they have picky clients who were very happy with their work with Canons or because they own a lot of equipment built around that system and there is still a lot of market for people shooting Canon. Some will use continue to use both depending on the needs of a project, or maybe in the next couple months another camera will be released that makes no one care about this comparison.

Many people do not have the patience to change their camera package every time some digital camera manufacturer releases a new camera with one new feature or slightly improved specs in one area. I would probably be working more if I didnt spend so much darn time reading and typing about every new camera that has/is/will come out.

its a preference... To me, I always thought the DOF of the 5D was so narrow but it's a personal preference. Just like i hate Sony camcorders... it's all a personal choice.

5Dii for saving money?

A year ago my friend bought a new 5Dii body, a used 24-70 2.8L, and a used 70-200 2.8L. If he decides to sell it today, he can sell them all very quickly at little or no loss. I call it free rental.

Reference, please?

I might be mistaken, but on his camera buying guide/recommendations/pluses/minuses it seems to indicate that by his pro points about the 5d mk2. http://philipbloom.net/2010/12/07/whichdslr/ he refers to it as his favourite image of them all, which presumably makes that his preference, or at least its image. So i don't think Bloom is just following the herd if that is the case.

My god, it may just mean that these cameras are really just different tools for different jobs...

A friend and I both have had 7D's since they came out a year ago and when I told him I was going to switch over to the GH2 he said, "Why would you give up the quality of genuine Canon equipment?" I asked him, "What's so special about 'genuine Canon equipment?'"

I think this is just another example of blind brand-loyalty. So many people think Canon is just more "pro" than Panasonic, even though the GH2 is superior at virtually everything compared to the Canons.

The build quality of the Canon 7D/5DmkII and L lenses is so far superior to the GH- line it's not even funny. Don't get me wrong, I like the image better out of the Panasonics, but we should get real here. No live monitoring on the GH1 either - big problem. Why aren't pros using the GH2/AF100 yet? Geez they've only been out for a few weeks (if that!) - it's better to get to know the camera you have and know how to use it to it's fullest than it is to just have the latest and greatest.

All this said by someone who loves the GH13 and has used it extensively and will buy a GH2. But I also have Canons (7D) and I really like them.

Re: 5DmkII - you can get shots with the 5DmkII that up until this point has been limited to shooting vistavision - for a really good cinematographer this is an awesome tool to finally have at your disposal in a compact form factor - there are shots you can get with the 5DmkII that you can't get with just about any other camera (aside from shooting something like vistavision).

Here's my brand loyalty...

"Dear Canon, thank you for blowing off the DSLR video community and announcing absolutely nothing new at CES this year. Now I can sell my 7D and buy two GH2's without hesitation. Although... the micro 4/3'rds format is dumb as hell and there are practically no decent lenses for it. Oh well, I'll just get an adapter. Thanks again!"

The GH2 is not cool/sexy/pro enough. Its too small, too plastic, too fiddly - consumer style. Remember the Canon XL1 days? People complained about their ergonomics, their image quality, the fake progressive scan aka frame mode ... but it was sooo cool. Even Apple put it next to their PowerBooks. When I'm surrounded by video/photo journalists it seems to be important to have big lenses with a red ring in front. Better a white lens (XL1 style). Your gear indicates if you are a tourist or a pro. The 5D with a 70-200 is your backstage pass. This is all plain BS but deep inside people are driven by it. The AF100 is the anti XL1. Philip Bloom has already pointed out that this is a ugly piece of good gear. People will respect it but rather look out for something more sexy. RED is the best example in how much sexiness of gear matters. They don't even need to release their stuff ... so I should better rig up my GH2 and replace this ugly tomcat avatar with a picture of it. Hm - need to ebay some Zeiss glass before can do it - well, maybe I should wait for the 5DIII before I can do anything

lol you'd think so - and incidentally i couldnt agree with you more - in terms of cinematography, for me a 35mm sensor would be damned well delightful. The gh2 has plenty of features that make it awesome too, the pain in the bum really is the trade offs necessary. And my god they still certainly exist for every model we have to choose from as yet (oh until armageddon!) (you know... the bit in popolus 2 where we all turn into gods and fight it out hehe

Haha...everyone makes mistakes.

I wasted a year and a s**t load of cash with the Canon 5D2 until the GH13 came along. For MY work the GH13 is a superior VidDSLR system...I got sick of the line-skip artifacts; stabilizer gyros that sound like coffee grinders and total lack of AF (very hard to pull focus underwater). The IQ of the Canons doesn't come close either...for video.

But of course each to their own. No one camera is (so far) perfect/fullfills all requirements ...and I can understand why many opt for the Canons. Oh...and don't underestimate the build quality of GH1. I've had mine through some pretty tough environments with no failures. On the other hand Luminous Landscape reported that about half of the Canon 5D2's failed during a trip to Antarctica.

This thread is so disappointing to read.

Why do I have a Canon DSLR vs a Panasonic? Because at the time it I spent MY money, was the best camera for my needs. MY needs. It's not brand loyalty, and I could give a crap about following any herd. I *STILL* prefer the look coming out of my Canon to the way the Panasonic's look. That's my preference and my choice.

But suggesting that people who make a different choice than you are ignorant lemmings is beyond the pale. Get over yourselves.

First person the build a fake outer case of a Canon 5Dmk2 that conceals a real GH2 inside will make a fortune.

Or... you could always put a Canon sticker over the Lumix Logo :>)
