Why cinema mode is limited in the XA20?

Hello,

I have just received my XA20 and I am very disappointed because in cinema mode it is not possible recording with 50p (the AVCHD 28Mbps 50p and MP4 35 Mbps 50p are disabled).

One of the reasons I bougth this camcorder is because I love the standard cinema filter from Canon.

For me the image in M mode is very exaggerated and I do not like it.

Does any one know why Canon is disabling those options in cinema mode?

Canon please give them to us in a new firmware version !!!!

Thanks,

This camera seems to be a bit of a let down to me. They put a "pro" label on it but it is missing some things. Canon just can't stop crippling cameras these days...

Just a guess - perhaps because a "cinema" mode implies cinema and cinema is still traditionally associated with lower frame rates despite recent experimentation with HFR.

As far as M mode - you have several controls to adjust the image in M mode (brightness, contrast etc). So, you have all tools to make it less "exaggerated"

One way around the lack of a 'cinema tone' filter in the 50p mode (60p in North America) is to colour-grade the image in post-production. I use the Colour Curves feature in
Sony Vegas Platinum Movie Studio to do light colour grading and it works well. I was a bit disappointed too to see that the 50/60p mode offers no cinema filter. It's possible that Canon could eventually offer such a filter in a firmware upgrade, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it. I personally don't find the image in 'M' mode to be exaggerated, because when I go into Image Effects (this is where you can set colour depth, sharpness and contrast), everything is at zero anyway. If you still find the image in 'M' mode to be too much for your liking, you can always dial back colour depth, sharpness and contrast to the -1 or -2 setting, although this will result in a very dull and washed-out image.

100% agree,i find my XA10 image fine in M mode, all the extra features on the new models must be an improvement, for me its whether to get the XA20 or HF-G30.as for cinema mode i have not used it on my XA10 i probobly should have experimented with it but the cinema mode on my HV30 probobly put me off.
