7D Why AGC still cannot be turned off?

Why none of the firmware upgrades 'fix' this issue?
Plenty of 7D users' wishlists have that item on top. Myself included. I really can't imagine why this is still an issue and it is not being addressed.

Syncing sound is the largest pain on my workflow. I know about plural eyes, but still. I even thought about saving a few hundred bucks more and get a 60D instead of spending money on software or a juicelink device (great device BTW).

Will that fix detour some customers from buying 60Ds/T2is/T3is?

What do you guys think?

DSLR audio isn't great - period. Crappy pre-amps, significant noise floor, agc or not. Buy a standalone hard disk recorder, or use a camcorder as a sep sound device.

Depending on the type of audio being recorded, in camera audio can be totally useable (see my sig for details).

The problem is, the 7d is something of a pain in this regard... canon seems uninterested in updating that feature (despite that they have in other models like the 5d), and have even put extra precautions to prevent third party hacks to fix it (like magic lantern). This is one of the reasons I don't recommend the 7d for video these days- unless you require constant 1080p to an external monitor while filming, you're usually better off with a different model camera.

Interesting that when I post from a mobile device, my sig doesn't show up. Lets try that again...

The AGC off feature on the 60D and T3i is not as useful a feature as it sounds. Basically the only thing the manual audio on those cameras do is prevent the auto-gain adding noise during quiet parts.

It still does not give you any way of monitoring whilst recording so you have no idea if your audio is clean, clipping or barely audible. You're still better off with an external recorder where you can monitor via headphones and meters. Sure, you can get great results on the t3i or 60D but it's too risky to use on a paid shoot.

The Magic Lantern on the 550D is a much better option, giving you the ability to monitor audio full time with on-screen meters (while recording) as well as the ability to use headphones via the AV output. For optimal quality though, an external recorder is the best option.

+1

Magic lantern is fantastic but only if u have a camera that supports it.

Yes, I am even thinking putting my 7D for sale and get a 550d... I have a Tascam DR-100 I am very happy with it, but maaaaaaannnnn; that syncing process is such a pain for me. :(

Hi deltoidjohn,

Anything better than the 7D for sound recording. Excuse my ignorance, but what is the difference between a T2i and a 550d? Is 550d the European name for the T2i?

If that so,.. T2i or T3i?

By the way: Thanks everyone for all you answers!! And Happy Easter ^_^

What's your read on the final question?

What's your read on the final question?

Well, that kinda answers my question. At least my read is that it seems unlikely to happen.

That is a bummer!!:(
