So, how are you getting the 2.40:1 mask you are using?

Technically, I'm not yet. Usually, I rely on PNG overlays, but can't find the right size yet. :( So, I have been resizing 3840 ones (which ends up wrong... or setting Vegas project at 4096x1707 but that creates other issues. Annoying. Working on my FIRST 4k Project now, so I will find, or have someone MAKE me a mask of the right ratio.

What program are you using? In premiere I just make a new title and mask the top and bottom with black boxes. In other programs, I'd just make a png file with the mask in Photoshop and import it over the top. Don't see why you'd need to pay for a mask.

Also, I personally just mask an arbitrary amount that I think looks good for each project. Sometimes I even change the aspect ratio within a project. It's something that nobody notices, but can give a landscape shot a much wider, more epic feel.

Sony Vegas. I lack PS knowledge, skills, and software... there is no simply masking built in to vegas. k, you inspired me and I figured it out in Vegas: drop a BLACK COLOR on a track, cookie cutter it with border .75 and size .7 BAM! aspect mask! Not sure how bad that affects processor but it works.
oops. my project was set wrong. oh well.. on the right track on

both. i shoot C4K 24fps for my own shorts (finishing in 2K), but UHD 23.976fps for clients (finishing in 1080).

I work for an AV company so we mostly use 29.97 and 16:9 aspect ratio is the same as all our HD and SD(anamorphic) projects so I stick with UHD.

main reason I'm asking is it feels like the workflow for 3840 is a bit simpler than 4096. I prefer 4096 for a few reasons, but 3840 seems to be becoming the "standard" in 4k.... TVs, recorders, monitors all UHD based

UHD, mostly because I'm delivering 1080, use 1080 60p for slomo stuff and can't be bothered with the camera reboot for 4K. I suppose I might get a little more time on a 64gb card with UHD too.

shoot 24p C4K mode and mix that with 23.98 footage from a GH2 or other camera?

The Moon Trial 7 Set D hack records in genuine 24 fps, not the faux 23.976. So you can have both cameras shooting 24 exact.

As an added bonus, Moon T7 is probably the best looking patch ever released for the GH2, and even pushes the quality of the GH2 over the GH4's 200 Mb/s mode. (I think, anyway.)

Having said all that, in my experience there IS a difference between 24 and 23.976, and they will NOT mix properly. So shoot the same on both cameras, whichever you choose.

Here here for Moon T7 for GH2. Truly amazing quality. And there's still something special - meaning really freaking great when lit correctly - about that old cam, even as the tech marches on. Maybe a little like the continued love the the Sony F35 many years on...

I'm shooting all 4k on the GH4 in the UHD mode and loving it immensely.

I don't think that would be a result you'd get... IMHO.
