Whooping your kid's A$$es. Do you think it's wrong?

My kids. 5 and 2 have been acting a fool here lately, and I RARELY smack their bottoms for doing crazy stuff but sometimes I feel it is needed. Do you, that have kids, smack their bottoms when they get too out of control? I RARELY got whooped when I was a kid and I hate doing it, but when your kids pour juice in your computer for no reason it seems kind of warranted. I just hate doing it and I'm feeling really torn right now.

for parents only.

Well, technically, I AM a parent (...whoa), though our child has not been born yet. My wife and I have discussed this at great lengths and, yes, we will be spanking our children. We were both spanked growing up (me way moreso than her, but she was a good child). I've seen too many kids these days that do whatever they want, and it's because their parents don't discipline their children. They want to be their friends (I have about 30 hours of college classes on this in my major), and not their parent.

Don't misconstrue this with beating children. I don't condone that. However, a pop on the rear or back of the leg will get them to straighten up. It worked on me (in the long run). But please ... whatever the discipline you choose, STICK WITH IT or your kids will walk all over you.

"Spare the rod, spoil the child."

I totally feel you Hawk.

Hummm... tough one. I was hit with a leather belt that left welts if I was a bad kid, but that was the late 60's early 70's so times and opinions (and laws) were different... and hey... just look how good I turned out! ;-p (no comments Richard...)

I have raised two daughters, one is 21 now and the other is 16 (going on 35) and never once laid a hand on them, not even as smaller children. They are both just fine and make me a very proud parent each day.

SO... what I'm saying here is that I think you can only influence your children so much, if they need a spanking to keep them in line...no big deal. If you're spanking them every other day...???? There is always a good 'time out' or 'early to bed'... there are options. You can only do the best you can do as a parent, the rest is up to the kid.

Now... if I had boys? Whole different story!

NOTE: remember, if someone sees you spanking your child, they can call Child Services and you will have your kids taken away until it's cleared up. This happened to a friend of mine at a public event!

LOL. I will not comment. My kids are not that bad, but every now and then...lord jesus. I'm sure you know what I mean. I do believe in spanking, but I feel so bad afterward.

I totally get it!!! I always wanted to spank them, but the Ex & I decided not to...we were lucky, nothing major so far (knock on wood...wait...I shouldn't use that phrase when talking about daughters!).

We can only do the best we can do...there's no such thing as a perfect parent...just ask my Ex.

I only smacked my daughter's behind once, for a very extreme case. She's a pretty good kid otherwise, just can be a pest sometimes when I need to get work done, but she's an only child so we are her only playmates much of the time. For some reason counting down to 10 seems to get her to stop whatever it is she's doing most of the time. But there are those days man when it takes all my will power to not smack her across the face. Another thing I noticed is that the amount of misbehavior my child engages in seems directly proportional to the amount of unstructured time she has. Keeping the kid busy and engaged in something and she usually stays out of trouble.

No. Discipline through spanking doesn't mean you or the child is bad. I often see kids throw outrageous tantrums in public that are ideal candidates for a butt whoopin'. They don't need welts on their legs, just an attention-getting swat on the butt.

I'm not saying you should or shouldn't, just don't do it in public if you do.

I was at a gas station and a dad kept slapping his kids (5 or 6 years old) a bystander grabbed him, took him out in the parking lot and beat him so bad his face was disfigured, his nose was ready to fall of, his eyes were so swollen, the parking lot was covered in blood.

Funny thing was no one at the gas station could remember what the guy looked like or what kind of vehicle he was in when he left.

I love seeing parents who hit kids get their asses kicked. But a little spanking is prob ok, just not an ass whoppin, the above was in reference to over use if it.

That's pretty much what my parents did, a swat on the butt to get my attention.

Once I turned 30, it didn't have quite the same impact.

My parents' efforts at using corporal punishment didn't really have the intended effect...as soon as I noticed that the pain was minimal and transitory I just accepted it as the price of getting caught.

They weren't big fans of it anyway. Probably because they could see it wasn't working...

I'm having some problems buying this.

On the bright side you can be sure that - if true - the psychological effect upon the children was nothing but positive...

I have no children.

I see highly unruly children, and I think a spanking is in order, because whatever they're doing, it isn't working.

But then, I know some extremely respectful and well-behaved children whose parents I know for a fact have never touched them.

So, I dunno. What I do know is that you're not your kids' friend. You're their parent. Keeping that in mind probably goes a long way, whatever you decide to do.

I won't debate what's best but I'll just say this...

I grew up with the belt. I now have a (almost) 7 year old daughter and have never laid a hand on her.
She is extremely well behaved and I hear this from other families, teachers, etc. I can just say a word and can get her immediate attention.

Now, I've wanted to swat her on the butt a few times but I've always held back. Having been brought up that way I realized that it didn't teach me anything. And once I was old enough to hold my own the belt was useless so then what does the parent do?

Be stern, use harsh punishments and most of all... be consistent.
Taking away the things they enjoy for long stretches of time can do wonders for a behavior adjustment. :)

I think the gradual lack of said A$$ Whoopings over the last generation & a half or so speaks volumes on the overall current state of youth punkassedness...
