Who gets to name a camera?

So I've been looking around at different and upcoming cameras (I tend to do this the first hour of work), and it all of a sudden struck me: Who gets to name these things, and WHY do they use such crappy names?

GL2, XL1s, DVX100, HVX200, FX1, Z5J, and so on...

Why do they try to confuse the consumer? I love how the RED uses real words for their line. I'll never be able to afford one, but at least I feel welcome to relate.

Maybe the other companies could take a clue from car manuf. (I only abbreviated that word because I can't spell it) and give them cool names:

Canon Apache, Panasonic Razor, Sony Bowl of Chicken. At least I could differentiate in my mind.

I gotta' be honest and tell ya' that the Sony Bowl of Chicken wasn't what I expected... at all.

Look at motorcycles in the USA vs. Europe... a YZF 1000 here, was a Thunder-Ace over there, a CBR 900 here was a Blade there, etc. etc. Then the R1 came out and flipped the bike world on it's ear... and suddenly they adopted mostly technical names over there as well. Technical products are aimed at MEN... by and far (sorry ladies, but this is fact)... and decisions are made on technical marketing and the idea that you are buying a piece of technology.

When the day comes that RED has direct competition... DIRECT COMPETITION as in... "should I get the Sony Bowl of Chicken... or should I get the RED?"

When that day comes... The Sony will be called something like... the X 9000... and a year or two later the RED will be called RD 9... or whatever.

Right now the RED lives in an exclusive position... and so they can market with emotion and enigmatic symbolism. Once 4K gets mainstream I'll wager they'll give the RED a technical name.

The other cool thing about RED is when you get it you get to name it again. Ours is named Jean Grey.

Mike came up with that name because Wolverine called her "Red"

I heard originally, Panasonic was looking for a place to market their new 24p prosumer camera and they found DVXUSER.COM. They contacted Jarred for permission to use the name and the rest is history.

My favorite names are the Genesis and the Viper. Mostly the Viper cam though. I mean - how cool is that. Viper Cam.

Phantom is a good name too.

The XMEN were as renowned for their club-quality parties and hang-outs as they were for bombing trains and neighborhoods

Your first post in this thread was just to set-up a plug for your graffiti crew, so everyone would think you're cool, wasn't it?

That is pretty cool though.

I am really surprised that the Canon Mediocre100 and the Sony Disapointment250 didn't take off. I thought those were really solid camera names
