White Balance Again

I've searched all the WB threads and can't really find the answers I need but apologies if I've missed it somewhere.

After 18 months use I love my HMC now but I've never been happy with the white balance performance - ATW or manual - and even returned my first HMC after a few days of filming everything blue! My Canon XHA1 gives near perfect auto WB and I rarely need to do it manually. The HMC ATW delivers a blue hue so I've given up on that and use Ach and Bch set manually and PRST switched between 3.2 and 5.6.

3.2 is quite accurate but 5.6 usually gives a slightly pink hue (outdoors) and I can't see a way to reset it, is it possible.

Manual WB setting drives me mad! On a wedding shoot for instance I try to set Bch for outside (to avoid the pink) and Ach for inside. In either case using a white card gives badly blue hue so I end up waving the camera around at random clicking the AWB button until it looks OK in the viewfinder. I try grey objects, blue etc but there seems no consistency. So sometimes I get it right (more luck than judgement) but inevitably end up forever resetting the WB with Edius.

I'm either doing something wrong or the camera is faulty, any ideas please?

Strange to have these problems...

When doing manual white balance, are you using manual exposure too?

1. You should expose the shot correctly before taking a white balance.
You can use the WB or Grey card for exposure too.
2. You should fill the frame completely with the WB or Grey card - are you doing so?

The fact that when you use your camera on full auto and the WB is still way off make me think that perhaps there is a fault with the camera.

Yes I always use manual exposure too. If it's over or underexposed as I try to WB it tells me so. Perhaps I'm not always totally filling the frame with white but always the central area.

Hi Barry,

I guess you have reset the scene file to make sure the colour temp settings are neutral.

try adjusting color temp for A and B channels inside your scene file.
that will allow you to correct for the blue or pink tones.

Ah no I didn't reset the scene file, that should help. I'll trial and error it. Thanks. What about the 5600 preset, can that be tweaked somehow?
