Which timeline setting for GH1?

Hey guys,

I'm finally beginning to edit my feature film on a professional NLE (rough cuts were done previously on a consumer grade NLE).

I'm using Avid MC5 and don't know what timeline to set up for, using my GH1 footage.

I tried 1080P/24 and it didn't work, so I tried 1080P/29.97 and it worked.

Before I go too far, could someone tell me what the correct timeline set up is for GH1 AVCHD footage (All footage was shot as Full HD 1080/24P)

Thanks

You need to first remove the pulldown from the footage. The 24p is embedded in a 60i stream and needs deinterlacing with a pulldown cadence.

You don't need to remove pulldown. In which case, the 29.97 timeline is the right one to be using. But from what I hear, editing straight AVCHD is always more taxing on a computer.

If you can afford a bit more, Neo Scene works well to remove the pulldown and also creates files that are easier to edit.

This is not correct, most NLEs will need to remove pulldown even if they're capable of editing AVCHD natively.

Because when you edit more than one clip together you will have different 3:2 patterns, which may lead to visible hickups, in addition to the 'interlace' artifact of 60i.

Ahh. That seems to be an aesthetical thing. I still don't see how most professional NLEs NEED pulldown removed, even though I still think its reccomended.

An aesthetic problem in a visual medium requires a fix.

I would not class 'visual artifacts' due to either interlace or out of step telecining, to be any differing than 'clicks' in an audio track... if they were intended... then it is an aesthetic matter... if they were unintended they should be removed.

Since butting up two clips and getting a 'click' between they because of some frame misalignment... that's a technical error, and should be removed/dealt with.

Given what the OP wrote I think it is easy to assume that he wants 24p footage.

Actually it sounds like he'll use what works. But again there's a difference between saying someone NEEDS to remove pulldown if the NLE is functioning with it. Why do you think the 24p is in a 60i wrapper in the first place? To ensure compatibility will as many video editing programs as possible and to easily play straight from cam to a TV.

A need would be something like "you need the right USB cable to transfer the footage to your computer." To remove pulldown is optional. These are consumer/prosumer cameras after all.

If he is editing a feature, I think it's safe to assume he wants it to look as good as possible. Why create an extra step to fix later? If he wants a 24p out, then doing the pulldown now is the only thing that makes sense, especially if the audio is linked to it.

Having a frame off here and there may not sound like a big deal, but it really is huge. I've done the pulldown later and it DOES affect the timing. If you are just throwing it up on youtube, I guess it doesn't matter. However, if you are expecting someone to pay to see your movie... Watch the special features on Terminator 2 to see what it looks like when you remove one frame every second from the timeline.

Ok. One, I have Neo Scene and use it. Two, I also recommended removing pulldown. Three, it isn't completely necessary to remove pulldown, only highly recommended. I'm simply stating the difference between a necessity and a recommendation (no matter how high the recommendation is). Four, who said anything about removing pulldown AFTER editing with pulldown? Highly unrecommended.

You can remove pulldown with avisynth and deshaker. It is very easy and free. Check out the workflow forum for more info...
