General Which One?

Taking the plunge any day now. Which camera the T2i or the 7D? My primary camera is the HMC150. I`m getting into the whole still shot thing now and will also use the new one for a back up camera to the HMC150. Which camera is better? better yet which camera will i be more happy with?

for stills the 7D is superior. If you want to spend the money get the 7D. If you want to save some cash grab a T2i. You will be happy with either one as long as you understand the shortcomings of DSLRs when shooting video.

I understand the shortcomings of the video part. Like i said video would only be a back up if my HMC150 went down or had to be serviced. Will i get better still photo`s with 7D vs the T2i? Also i live in a pretty moist climate in Florida. Which camera is more hearty when it comes to that? Sorry for my stupid questions but i dont know much when it come to DSLR`s.

Like Richard said, the 7d is superior when it comes to stills. Eight fps versus 3.7. Faster 19-point AF versus slower 9-point. 100% viewfinder coverage versus 95%. A wider LCD viewing angle. A command dial. Wireless flash controller. Three-stop exposure bracketing versus two; same thing with flash exposure compensation. The 7d has AF micro adjustment; the t2i does not. The battery for the 7d is rated for more shots than the t2i's. The 7d offers variable resolution RAW, the ability to create new folders, a top LCD function panel, silent shooting modes, and weather protection. The maximum shutter speed on the 7d is 1/8000; on the t2i, it's 1/4000.

One difference worth mentioning which impacts video is that the t2i does not have in-between ISO capability.

go with 550d if you are beginner, after some time if you will feel lack of some functions you can buy 7d.I dont think that extra 7d functions are worth twice the price of 550d.

A wider LCD viewing angle.

This is incorrect. The LCD on the t2i is wider and has more pixels which in turn relates to a higher resolution.

One thing that must be noted is the 7D cost almost twice as much as the T2i, so if your just using it for video the image quality are the same so save your pennies.

Actually, you are confusing things. While the Rebel T2i boasts a slightly high-resolution LCD (1,040,000 vs 920,000), the 3.0" LCD on the EOS 7D offers a 170-degree viewing angle vs a 160-degree viewing angle on the Rebel T2i.

Thus, as I stated, the 7d has a wider viewing angle.

You won't necassarily get better photo's with the 7d, but it might be easier to get them. More buttons, an extra dial, better viewfinder, faster fps, etc all mean that you can work faster with less fiddling around.

Also consider whether you want to have 2 sets of cards or not (the 7d, unlike the 550d, can't share SD cards with you HMC150), and factor that into the price.

I did not know this...thought it was 4000...how do i get up to 1/8000 on my 7d?

In shutter priority or manual modes, it can be chosen. If you're in Av, it may not be required.

How are you liking the Takumar? Is there a big difference between the SMC and the Super?

The 7d LCD screen has less pixels and is 3.0 in size

The t2i has more pixels and is 3.2 in size

So correct me if I'm wrong but how in the world can the 7D provide a wider viewing angle?

You are correct that the 7d has fewer pixels. However, you are incorrect in saying that the t2i's LCD is "3.2 in size". In fact, it is a 3-inch LCD with an aspect ratio of 3:2.

More importantly and to the point, the viewing angle is the angle formed on both sides of the bias angle—the angle from the perpendicular from which the display is best viewed—where the contrast of the display is considered acceptable.

You know from experience with your computer monitor that LCD displays have limited viewing angles. They lose contrast and become hard to see at some viewing angles. In addition, they have more contrast and are easier to read at others.

Viewing angle and screen size/resolution are not at all linked.

What the viewing angle means is if you are holding the camera at some awkward angle (like taking a photo over your head in live view mode, or when you have 3-4 people all crammed around the screen trying to review photos) you will be able to see the screen from a wider range of angles.

So while you won't see as many pixels with the 7d, you will be able to see them clearly in more situations.

The biggest advantage of the 550d's screen is the 3:2 aspect ratio. Because pictures actually fill the entire screen with no cropping, the size difference is acutally quite a bit more than the 3.0" vs 3.2" comparison.

Well guys i just ordered a 7D kit with the EF 28-135mm lens and 2 CF 16 gig cards. Hope i`m going to be happy.

Don't allow yourself to get overwhelmed by all of the features and choices the 7d offers. Take it slowly. Learn one new feature at a time and give it time to try. Keep some notes.

There are people who say that there are so many extra features that no one uses or understands them. These folks are either lazy or disinterested. The 7d is an extremely powerful camera and deserves to be studied.

Jordan, you beat me to it with the viewing angle issue.

Looks like you even corrected me about the 550d screen size before I posted... although the 3:2 screen definitely feels bigger because there are smaller letterboxes (in video mode, none at all for stills)

Also not to forget that the 7D is solid, metal and heavy-ish, more durable and better sealed.

The T2i is lighter and more plasticky. Sometimes less heavy can be a disadvantage for video, but for photography less weight is often better.
