Which Lens would you use for very small items?

Hi Guys,

I want to shot some watches and small parts very Close. I am using a 17-55 a 30mm but I can not go near the object to reach a very close footage. Which lenses should I use for shots like this?

You will want to get a Macro focusing lens. I have a Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm zoom, with a Nikon F mount that I use, with an adaptor, on Canon T2i and a Sony FS100 that allows close focusing at just inches away from the lens. The images look great. These lenses can be found on eBay, for a variety of lens mounts, very cheap (Well under a $100.00). I believe I paid $35.00 for mine.

hi guys,

thank you for all replies. Wow cool I will try the cheap solution using a diopter. Will I loose sharpness?

Just keep in mind that the shorter the focal length, the shorter the working distance. So if you want to shoot such a small item at larger than life-size, you'll want to use a longer lens, for more framing and lighting options. It's a bit hard to shot when you less than an inch away.

Hi Guys,

which Lens should I upgrade with diopters to be able to shoot very small parts?

- canon 17-55mm 2.8
- 50mm
- 30mm
- 11-16mm

I've never used a reversed-lens adapter, but I doubt it will give you better IQ than macro tubes (which cost 5 times less and will work on all your lenses, independently of their filter size)

I think it depends on the lens, and on how many tubes you mount (it comes with 3 rings of different lengths, allowing for 7 different configurations)
if you tell me which focal length you were planning to use, I can test it (and post some samples)
I'd bet my 90mm f/2.8 is quite good for this, will that one suit you?
