LOL, Matt, though not as loud as when I hit the apple site and saw that the first great new feature of Lion they're plugging is an apps store.

I am primarily on FCPro, but will be trying to use Premiere CS5 more as I see a lot of sign of Apple trying to turn FCPro into a consumer product and their reliance on the antiquated QT codec is getting old.

I will not go the CS5 way yet, but if in March/April the new FCP update isn´t going the right direction it will be time to switch again......

I love what apple did with Logic Pro, as I use it ALL the time over ProTools, Digital Perfomer, etc (I own them all), but, I cannot stand Motion. I own that and After Effects and to me AE owns Motion. Any time I try and do advanced effects in Motion it just fails to be usable for me. Yet on AE, I can push push push and keep going. The new rotoscoping brush is amazing (most of the time).

I can make some neat things in Motion, but if I want more original material, or want to heavily tweak it, that's when my problems with it come in. Once you get over the learning curve of AE (which is like photoshop in motion) it is amazingly powerful and I am really fast in it.

You want an interface that is a pain to use, use Maya or Blender! :) They just have so many things to do with them, it's crazy.

I found the Premiere and FCP to have a lot of similarities to me, but, I've not pushed either of them far.

A major development and a game changer when comparing Premiere CS5 to FCP is CUDA powered playback.

Effectively a realtime player of many effects ( including CC and Keying) ie no rendering required for playback.

One test I did involved 8 video layers of mixed footage ( DV, 720p, 1080, Color bars and RED 4K) all with effects and some with Ultra keys. Realtime playback.

Adobe Mercury Playback Engine absolutely changed the way I edit and even think about my editing workflow.

No question ....I will be using PPRO to edit AVCHD. ( Native)

Unfortunately, my Mac Pro is from 2006 and none of the cards available support it. I've the best card I can put in my mac pro which is the 8800GT. (unless someone figured out how to turn it on for this card yet, as it does have CUDA support in the card, Adobe has not activated it for this card).

Wow. That is huge. On CS3 AE I'd have to render out keyed footage. If I ever used Keylight without rendering... CRASH!

Do you really think you will be able to use AVCHD as a seamless editing codec with ease? After my CS3 experiences... I'm hesitant and have become a slave to transcoding and rendering out footage at every stage of the game.

I was planning to transcode with NeoScene but maybe I should just upgrade to CS5?

Then you should definately upgrade to CS5, CS5's nothing to do with CS3 even with 4, CS4 now sounds like a transition to proper NLE. If i wouldn't see CS5 i was about to move to FCP. But Adobe done a good job this time..

I love CS5 so much my wife thinks I am having an affair.

Just messing around with After effects and the REAL TIME effects in PP inspired to me to write a screenplay for a movie that I thought I would only be able to do in 5 or more years from now!

Really, FCP vs PP CS5 feels like a Nokia 2110 compared to a Blackberry or an iPhone!

Get thee behind me ye olde brick!

Time to upgrade. A new Windows 7 PC will probably be cheaper than your 2006 Mac, as well as faster (especially with CS5 and a CUDA card.)

No thanks. :) Windows doesn't have Logic Pro or Digital Performer, and I personally CANNOT STAND ProTools. (Even though I use it on jobs that require it).

My Mac Pro has been more stable than ANY system I have ever used. Given it double duties as a sound production system, I've never had such good luck with a machine. I have 3 firewire audio interfaces on it, 1 USB, a audio/midi hybrid communications synth (Virus TI) on it, two controller keyboards, 2 30 inch LCD monitors, a black magic Intensity Pro going to a 47 inch monitor, and a UAD-2 DSP card that I use for mastering.

On the final few days of the last release of our latest web series episode, I was rendering with Maya, rendering with After Effects, and had open Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, and Logic Pro. And the machine was not sluggish. I was amazed. Even Safari open and iTunes running music. (Of course the 15G of RAM helps).

I switched from PC in 2003 and do not see any reason to switch back. I love the FreeBSD substructure in OSX, and am a developer as well. Everything I wanted in an OS began with OSX (and definitely NOT MacOS). And continues to be that way. For me, it's not the cost difference in the machine, but the gained productivity that I feel. CoreAudio and CoreMIDI are such well written foundation libraries. My ONLY complaint is the gamma issue, but to me, is mostly minor once dealt with.

Premiere is not normally my bottleneck, it's After Effects and Maya. After Effects, from everything I have read, does not use the mercury playback engine, only premiere. So for me, I just want to up my cores to 8, which is about $500 to do so with same core speed (2.66).

Personally I edit on FCP and I cant see that changing. Ill use log and transfer to prores HQ for everything AF100. It works like butter. I still like to do the old log way. Also takes care of the transcode for me. And whilst my edit studio has CS5, personally just using it for PS and AE.

Ive been asked why not premiere and edit natively? LONG GOP is a PITA to edit natively, sure premiere allows you to do it - but go to After effects / apple color and good times on renders.

This is merely what I use and why.

Id also caution that people be mindful that the OP`s intent wasnt to start a flame war - just asking for opinion, so if we can keep it on that the thread will continue.

Depends on your computer hardware. With the right hardware, yes, I find it basically effortless. You need a decent CPU and a CUDA graphics card to make it happen.

A "supported" CUDA graphics card as well. The list that Adobe allows you to use is A LOT smaller than the number of cards that have CUDA support. Some people have figured out how to get some of the non-supported cards to work, but, you never know what that will give you.

Just wanted to make that distinction, check the adobe site for the latest list.

The mini-hack (apparently akin to editing an HVX scene text file to get custom frame rates) works so well with lots of unsupported cards that it's practically a non-issue.

Yeah, my card's not on their list (Quadro FX 880M) but the hack enabled it and it works great.

I just mention it because anytime you go to the unsupported territory, you know how that goes. One small change from Adobe and you're scrambling to unload an update. It has happened to me before on other hardware so I am always careful.

As many have observed, there is more to the editing experience than working in native footage.

I don't have a problem transcoding to an intraframe codec especially when the ultimate roundtrip is to a grading app, and there isn't many better than Color, especially when bundled with FCS3.

There cannot be any credible, affirmative representation as to where Apple is going with its pro apps, except from Apple. If you do believe in the rumors, then Jobs said the next iteration will be "awesome," whatever that means.

Unlike Premiere, which was rewritten years ago by Adobe, FCP has so much outdated code. My guess is that the rewrite will take some time.

But who knows.

Actually I dont expect it to be as easy to edit as I am used to with DVCPRO HD ( P2.mxf) and I will reluctantly transcode as my NEW WORKFLOW!.

I am hoping that I can use the Adobe Media Encoder to transcode AVCHD to DVCPRO HD. This will be the very first test I do after I shoot my camera tests.
