dunno, i worked with it for 3 months now and im already feeling home at editing.
Once you get over the "lock" button you can cut and slide like...uh..like a very fast thing.

I have FCP and CS5 PP and I've not noticed a difference. In fact, I am really starting to like PP as well. Granted, I don't have a huge ton of editing experience in FCP. I tend to shoot, and do VFX with Maya and AE, and I let one of the other guys I work with do most of the editing. We try to split up all the tasks so that's why I am not so sold into any one NLE.

But of course, I score and do all the audio work as well at times, and I use Logic Pro, Digital Performer, Ableton and ProTools. I DO NOT use Sound Track Pro and will NEVER use that piece of crap again ever. :) (Mixed a whole film with STP and it had so many bugs I just redid it in another DAW).

CS5 on PC here which is too bad. I've discussed moving to Final Cut Pro on MAC with the higher ups but it's not gonna happen :-(

I am running 15G on my Mac Pro and 8G on my Mac Book Pro. Was needed for Maya 64-bit and AE 64-bit. Now I am considering swapping my 2 dual-cores for 2 quad-cores so my Maya renders are faster :)

Guess I'm the opposite of a lot of guys here. Started with Premiere 1.0, then Media 100 to FCP, then to CS4 Master with Premiere mainly due to the hype about dynamic linking since I do a lot of AE work. But I found CS4 dynamic linking so damn buggy it was driving me crazy. So back to FCP. I hear CS5 has really improved things, but I'm willing to hold out a bit longer to see what Apple does before going back to Adobe.

i am a bit worried about Apple's strategy,
Afaik they stopped the MacPro series and rumors say that after Lion the OsX series will be stopped also. Welcome iOS.

:S

but i really hope they're just rumors.

They stopped the XServe machines, but not the MacPro.

As for CS5, you can always download the 30 day demo as well to try out.

Well true, but they announced it stops being for sale January 31st :) So if I were buying a system, I think that is the last machine I would buy at this point!! Hehe.

I'm in the same boat as many here: FCP for now, but strongly considering a move to Premiere Pro CS5. I used Premiere Pro on the PC before I switched to Mac a few years ago. At the time FCP was a more stable and robust choice, Premiere used to crash on me pretty regularly.

I'm still on FCP 6, FCP 7 didn't offer much new for me.

I'd like to stick with FCP- I generally get on with Apple's application design and user interface ideas MUCH better than I do with Adobe's. I was to be seen dancing in the streets when Aperture 3 was released, having been consigned to the user interface modal hell of Lightroom for a few months. I even prefer Motion to After Effects for getting good results quickly and intuitively (although I acknowledge After Effects has a very deep, mature, high quality feature set).

So I'm really hoping Apple can ace it with the next release of FCP.

The main things I'd like are an interface overhaul and subsuming many of the functions of Soundtrack Pro, Color and Motion right into FCP so I can do it all from the editing timeline.

That would be the improvement I'd most like to see feature-wise... both from FCP and PP, frankly. I think they should just bite the bullet and rewrite the editing software from the ground up to include all of these function sets right in the editor... a separate program to allow content creation is fine, but when I want to fine tune sound, 99% of the time it starts off its life on my editing timeline, and I would like to work on it from there.

64 bit, improved performance, GPU assisted rendering, fixing the Quicktime gamma bug ... those are essential, if they don't get addressed then it is definitely time to start relearning Premiere Pro.

Cheers, Hywel.

I'll be using premiere pro as I always have. I love it but CS5 is very sluggish on my PC.

I need to get a new system built asap... anyone got any good sites to advise on spec for a editing/part time gaming machine?

or Smoke ;)

I still find Media100 to be the absolute best editor. Very fast, never any rendering, never crashes. I can teach someone how to edit on it in 1 hr. For me it takes less than half the time to complete a project in M100 than in FCP.

I also use FCP, but very reluctantly. PP still scares me I had so many bad experiences with its earlier versions. But I love AE.

Anyone remember a Imixx TurboCube or its successor the Stratosphere (both on a Mac)? We moved from them to InSync Speedrazor (PC), then Avid (PC) and then settled on FCP. I am pretty platform agnostic and try to invest in the best tool for the price. With that said, we find our MacPro's are in service longer than the PC's we've used and that helps the bottom line. Seems we were always upgrading PC motherboards and components just to stay current with software demands. Plus there was a time when I just loved tearing stuff apart and building cool new stuff to wrap my gear head around. :)

I've gone from M100 to M100 844 to Avid Media Composer (bleh!) to FCP...I'm sticking with Final Cut until NAB in April. I have a feeling we are going to see a major FCP upgrade at NAB. If not....I'm seriously considering switching over to Premier Pro.

This is what will ultimately determine the Pro Apps fate. The resources go where lion's share (pun intended) of the money is being made, and that's not in towers or pro apps, its in mobile solutions. At best, mac's will always be a robust niche in the desktop/laptop market, but the mobile market - and content delivery to the mobile market - is where they dominate, and where all the growth is. So it seems to follow that pro apps will suffer a slow, lingering death of benign neglect, unless of course a buyer steps up, which might not be a bad thing at all.

I'm going to be continuing to edit on premiere pro cs4 until i decide its time to upgrade. Not sure how my system will handle the AF100 footage.
my computer is running a sweet system, but i don't know how cs4 handles the avchd.
