Where's a fella to get a variable ND filter these days?

The lightcraft workshop filters are unavailable.

The genus fader NDs are unavailable.

I'm aware of the singh ray but I'm not dropping 500 bucks when I could get individual filters for the same/less.

Then there's the ebay realm......some lightworks (which still indicate long wait times), and some that just well....it's ebay.

I just ordered from Lightcraft yesterday? Then again I got a 72mm, since i use smaller lenses.

This is what I get in my 77mm world: (temporarily out of stock)

It's been that way for a while. And my order placed with b&h over a month ago for a genus fader nd, is just sitting there waiting on stock.

You are right though......72mms available. I guess I should have specified 77mm, and not the whole line.

They give you any idea of when to expect it?

You know, I'm not saying this will happen for you, but I ordered my 77mm LCW Fader ND from verified eBayer bonifaceleung in Hong Kong on 3/23/10. And it said "will take 5 weeks to ship" in big red print on the eBay add. Yet it shipped on 3/25/10 and I got it yesterday (3/31/10).

It's awful pretty too.

For a noob like me, how do you determine what size ND you need for what lens? Sorry if this is a remedial question...

The lens in question should have the filter diameter labeled on it somewhere, or else in the user manual. You could also Google the exact model.

If you have lenses with different filter diameters, then buy a filter for the largest one and use step-up rings for the smaller ones.

Exactly. At the moment, I have no 77mm lenses, but I plan on getting one in the next 3 months....many of the canon L series are 77mm. Makes sense to just buy that and then use step up rings. Step up rings are usually under 4 dollars shipped on ebay.

I don't think most people will need bigger than 77mm. I believe that is LCW's most popular size.

They must be selling like crazy. The singh ray is 77mm and unavailable, as well as the ones I mentioned.

I ordered an LCW one last night. We'll see if the wait time is what they say it is.

I just bought the 77mm fader off ebay.. paid extra for the 3 day shipping. I hope it gets here before my April 24th shoot! Come on bonifacelung I believe in you!
