Where to buy the HVX: a small guide.

Has anyone here at DVXuser actually bought a gray market camera? If so, what was your experience like? Just curious. I keep hearing about authorized dealer stories...
 
As was mentioned in the very first post; buying grey-market has it's merits, namely lower pricing (although BEWARE of current REBATES buying from authorized dealers, as that can amount to a lot!); but has higher risks; namely poor warranty & normally zero support.

I purchased grey market and was very pleased with the transaction, but I knew I was going to void warranty by modifying the cam anyway, so I really had not so much "to lose".
The buying experience was like buying a pack of chewing gum; there's the dough; here's the cam. Bye bye.

Did you buy an HVX and what dealer did you go thru? I've been thinking about buying a grey market HVX because I intend to put a Hydra into it, so paying extra for the voided warranty makes no sense. But I also want to find a more trusted grey market dealer so I don't get screwed.
 
I'd rather not publicly endorse any greymarket dealer like that.

EDIT: there's several choices out there. Buyer beware and use at own risk. Check resellerratings before purchasing, and use your own judgement.

Yay...I got my P2 card & Barry's great book. I ordered from AVS on 2/14/07, filed the rebate stuff on 2/20/07, and the treats arrived on 4/13/07 (when I was @ NAB! ha).

What's that? 7 weeks or so?

anyone know a good place to buy an hvx in toronto canada? I know vistek and henry's have it, but they're overpriced.
 
The lowest price I found from an authorized dealer is $4999 at studio exchange. I'd call the other dealers but I'm in an awkward situation of shopping for a friend and we were hoping to get a DVX100b. I'm seeing clues on this forum that they are out everywhere... the problem is that we need a camera relatively soon.

I hate JVC, he has a bias against Canon. And those two cameras are really the only ones we've bought into (DVX & HVX). Hopefully some DVXs will get supplied or maybe I could upsell him to buy HVX at 4500, but that's pushing it.

AVS has since changed their website because that price isn't alarming to me ($5669). Did the teamsters interfere? :)

I don't doubt that, just citing personal experience as that is all I have to draw from... hopefully you catch them on a good day as I guess I didn't.

The comment concerning their foresight of where the technical end of the business is going still stands...as per the doubting thomas stance...or at least that is how i feel especially considering the recent announcements by apple and the release of the peter jackson footage.

Im compiling a list for a business Im doing work for that's interested in purchasing an HVX and accessories for BMX videos. Right now, I have a VX2100 but the industry is quickly switching over to HVX's so we are just trying to keep up and stay ahead. So, I was wondering if there were any deals on P2 cards or anything anymore, it seems like we missed that first free P2 card deal, but maybe there's a select site with a deal like that. Any info would be appreciated, and not to mention a link to a site with wide angle lenses, not necessarily a fisheye lense because the Century Optics lense is over 3k which is too much..

The p2 card rebate ended a bunch of weeks ago.

The good news is that 8Gb cards have dropped to $650 street if you can find them

There is also a Century .6 wide angle adapter that goes for $475.

This is a big difference between wide angle or fish-eye lenses which are less exp vs the ones which are $1K+. The higher cost ones tend to retain the full zoom functions of the camera and still give you the wide field of view. Mind you, this isn't gospel 100% all the time, but it's a good rule of thumb.

Ya this is true, but to most who use a wideangle or a fisheye, they really don't need to zoom in while using that lens. (at least to most people I know)
I know for myself, on a fisheye I never had to ever zoom in while using the lens.

I'm new to this great forum and, since I just got my HVX, I thought I needed to share some info related to my purchase.

I'm on the verge of getting an HVX200, but looking for the PAL version as I work both in the US and UK. It's far easier to convert from PAL to NTSC than the other way. However, does a PAL version count as a grey import, and not be eligable for service in the US?

I've found 2 places that list PAL models, and wondered if either are reliable:
FHVideo.com in San Francisco and Globalmediapro.com, who list 2 PAL versions, HVX-200E and HVX-200EN - any ideas what the difference is?

I just received my HVX from Full Compass yesterday. I really don’t post testimonials very often since good customer service should be a given, but it seems to be more of a rarity as of late. So, I just wanted to recommend Shawn Tallard and Full Compass. For me, this was a substantial enough investment that I didn’t want to mess around with shady, unreliable, or just plain rude or, sometimes worse, unresponsive retailers. Full Compass did not disappoint.

Shawn was very helpful in assisting me along every step of the transaction. The prices he quoted me were extremely competitive, if not lower than most retailers, and shipping was more than reasonable. My items were carefully packed for a safe delivery (poor packing is a pet peeve of mine; delivery people can really kick things around). Not only that, but the package arrived a day ahead of schedule. All that from an authorized dealer ain’t too shabby in my book. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

So, credit where credit is due. :thumbsup:
