Where to buy HDV Tapes in person?

Just to clarify no difference in quality between DV and HDV tapes. Done tests that confirm. As long as you only use once your fine never tried overwriting and taping again but its not a good idea with any tapes to rewrite HDV or DV. Hope this helps. The Thunderous Productions Team

Thanks for the info.

What about while capturing to your computer? Do you need to play the HD footage from an HD camera? Or since you can use regular DV tapes can you use a regular non HD camera to capture you HD footage?

They have cheap ones at Walmart... Good enough to get you by in a pinch. DV and HDV tapes are the same thing. HDV just compresses the stream into the same size as DV.

I've been using $2.00 TDK tapes for years to record HD- Literally dozens of tapes. Maybe 3 dropped frames. Used to get them at costco until they switched to sony. I found one store locally that had leftover stock and I bought the last 200 TDK tapes they had.

Anyways - you can find the sony tapes at costco in packs of 10 for less than 25.00. The idea is that once you choose a tape, you want to try to stick with it. Usually costco will stick with a brand for a while and if you're ever in a bind, sony tapes can be found all over.

Dathan brings up a very good point, but a point that has been argued into the ground. I used the same brand of tapes always. The issue is that if you switch from TDK to Sony to JVC, they all use different types of oils and it will begin to gum up your camera heads. Stick to one brand and you should be ok.
