Ikonoskop A-Cam SP-16

No takers?

I did find an amazing 'like new' Cinema Products GSMO for sale. Might end up going with that-- don't know for sure.

Don't buy that camera.... that is a waste of money
for 6 grand... you could get an Eclair NPR or ACL and converted to S16 pl mount with rods and more for 1000 cheaper than that

if not get an HVX (period)

Thanks for the comments.

What do you think about the Cinema Products GSMO?

I already have a dvx100b w/sgpro adapter; lately I've been itching to shoot super 16, though, and would like to get some suggestions on cameras.

Thanks--

Kyle

Dear Kyle
I'm also into Super 16 right now

I buying the good and ugly ( just kidding) Eclair NPR and I will send it to Les "the master" Bosher to the conversion and so on

I think if you don't want to spaend more that 5000 grand you should get an Eclair NPr or ACL

The cinemaproduct is a great cam to, but I HAVE NEVER USED ONE....
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS what are you planning to do with it?

Best

Martini--

I want to start shooting most of my projects on 16 mm, including shorts and a low budget feature that's in development.

Do you think I could shoot a feature with one of these under $5,000 camera packages?

Thanks again for all your help--

Kyle

Yes, easily. But the A-Cam is not really meant to be an "A" camera, it's more of a B-camera or insert-shot or crash-cam. For your "A" camera you want something silent and crystal-sync'd with a TTL reflex viewfinder.

Eclair NPRs are good rugged cameras and can be converted to S16. ACLs are a lightweight alternative to the NPR; I've owned a couple and I found that they're touchier and need more maintenance to keep 'em running well. They overall seem a tad more fragile than the NPR, but they're smaller and cheaper. ONLY consider an ACL if it has the heavy-duty multispeed motor.

Yes an entire S16 feature could be done on an ACL or NPR. You wouldn't want to try that on an Arri 16S or Krasnogorsk K-3 or Bolex or Beaulieu, but the GSMO or ACL or NPR could do the job.

The best bang-for-the-buck is the Cinema Products CP16/R, but S16 conversions on those are very rare. That's more of a Regular 16 camera, not Super16.

Thanks a lot Barry.

I have the film bug now and it doesn't look like it's going to go away anytime soon.

One thing I've noticed is many of the lenses that come with these older 16mm cameras MAY NOT BE useable (or cover the s16 format) once the camera's converted to s16, so there's an additional expense to keep in mind--the need to purchase more lenses.

Also, is s16 as easily telecined? Maybe I don't fully understand the process of film to NLE. Many of the sites I've visited only mention 16mm film (I know it's the same film stock but one website said the s16 image was not as easily transferred to digital--I'm not sure why that would be, or if it's even true).

As always, Barry, your wisdom and comments are greatly appreciated--

Kyle

True, 16mm lenses don't necessarily cover S16, and the conversion of a lens is not a trivial process. I think most of the Switars cover the full S16 frame though.

S16 is easily telecined, I would think it'd be rather hard to find a transfer house that DOESN'T have an S16 gate. But definitely ask to be sure.

The film bug is dangerous hehehe but once you see the images it pays off
I bought an Eclair NPR in really good shape and I will be sending it to the UK to do the conversion.... Les Bosher that's the name you have to remember if you buy any 16mm cam... he transforms the cam into a brand new mechanical monster... he puts a pl mount and converts the cam to S16

I can't wait .....

Now lenses Yes pain but at the same time if you get a good set of primes or a great zoom that doesn't breath ( it doesn't zooms when you focus) and you are money ..... I use Canon FD still lenses for test na d for my feature I will be renting the great set of new Arri PL Ultra Zeiss.... those are beatifull.... if not I will be renting a canon 8-64

Anyhow if you need assistance with your project let me know

ok ?

Hi,

I just shot a film for my film school. Because I had to shoot four instead of two days, I had to rent the whole equipment... First I was shocked when I saw the offical pricelist of Panavision Prague and Camera rental Barrandov, but the people there are in fact very nice and gave me for example the whole camera package (ARRI SR3 + 1.3 lens set + follow focus etc) for 5000Cr a day (~242USD)...

So before you buy a s16 cam, perhaps think about renting the equipment from a rental house which supports new filmmakers.

And if you sill want to buy a cam, perhaps consider a used Aaton XTR. Some friends shot with it and were very pleased about the handling. Also there is a LTR version, but I never worked with it.

Bye David
