Where is the best HVX200 deal right now?

Jerrod, I was wondering when you'd join in. And for those who haven't dealt with them, Abel is a superb dealer, and has offices on each coast too (NYC and L.A.)

Here's the funny thing -- here we have dealers competing to give us the best deal, but with the Canon XLH1, it's the complete opposite. Canon dealers are required to sell at absolute full retail. Even Samy's is selling at absolute full sticker, and according to the Canon rep at DV Expo, all dealers (even B&H) will be required to charge list price and only list price for the XLH1. (not quite sure how that's legal, seems like price-fixing to me, but hey, it's the way it is).

So thanks to EVS, Spec-Comm, and Abel for competing for our business!

That's like getting the kiss on the cheek from the mafia.
Barry has given you his nod, you are now 'in' Jerrod.

Now someday he's going to ask you for a favor.....

Speaking of mafia.
How is that legal? Hmmm.
Then again I suppose we see similar things with Apple.
The biggest difference you'll see with G5 setups is $5 dollars or so.
But, where dealers make up for that is in freebies.

I woudln't be suprised to see dealers competing in Canon XLH1 sales that way.
They may all have the same price...but one guy will offer a free battery, another a box of tapes, another .... you get the point.

Jerrod is the man. :) We send each other business all the time, and we rent from each other too. Great people at Abel; Jerrod and Ian. They also cover both coasts, have a great standup business, excellent prices.

Rush...Andrew...Barry...

I thank you sirs...looks like quite the hot thread here!

As for where we (Abel Cine Tech) stand....a middle ground between EVS and Spec-Comm on the deposit front. We have a $1,000 REFUNDABLE deposit. As someone previously stated, it helps us better ensure giving you an idea of where you truly are on the infamous "LIST" of serious clients rather than it being bogged down with clients who may be interested and placed their names on numerous lists just in case but may not be serious buyers. However, we also recognize that things happen and due to delivery dates or a number of other factors you may decide not to purchase right now so we are not going to penalize you for that.

Regarding deliverability, we have an advantage that we are a bi-coastal company so we actually have 2 lists going from our LA office and our NY office. Give us a call and we can let you know where you would stand by placing an order today. We have more than enough cameras on order with Panasonic to meet all of our current orders.... as soon as Panasonic can ship them.

Prices....we have pricing for our P2 packages at:
http://www.mediumblend.com/abelstore/customer/home.php?cat=215

These are the standard list (well, our list - which is below Panasonic list of course) Give us a call and we can help you put together a package that has exactly what you need and for a competitive price. (I wouldn't call it a DVXUser Rate as I think Rush might have the trademarked!! ) And by package, that includes sticks, monitors, matteboxes, etc..... or even if you are looking for a Varicam package with the HVX200 as your B camera we can help.... We also have the advantage of being another one of the companies out there that is knowledgeable about the products we sell. (i.e. no dataentry/order takers who don't know one end of the camera from the other).

...all of that being said, the demand is clearly such that there is room for all of the dealers.... I certainly respect what Rush is doing down the street from us and applaud that Andrew has jumped in to answer questions as well....

....right back at ya.....

You won't find more positive remarks on the boards than about Rush.... and they are all well deserved....

I also have been helped by Abel -- I only wish I had more money to spend at your store.
You have everything! Your NAB Booth was awesome, too. The Panther stuff looks really, really nice.

Hey, Rush.. You work for Abel now? :cheesy:

No, but I would say they are our sister rental company.

I would never compete with Jerrod and Ian, they are too cool for words. Honest, fair, and very knowledgeable. We are neighbors and friends. I know any product I need, I can call them, and they can do the same. In the end, the customer wins, because we always find someone to help him/her. Birns & Sawyer, Filmtools, and Hollywood Studio Rentals as well. One of us can always help the customer in the end.

Wow, this is a hot thread! I think there are going to be plenty of orders to keep all parties busy for some time to come. Ultimately, you have to go with who you're happy with. I've ordered from Rush and he's always available if needed so a couple hundred bucks more for peace of mind is money well spent. I'm sure the other dealers are fine as well, but history is history. If you haven't chosen a dealer yet you're probably going to be waiting a while anyway, so you may as well just get on a list. If you want to get a better deal Go with Spec-Comm and make sure not to back out of the deal. If you don't want to give a deposit Go with EVS, Abel or B&H and save your extra pennies while waiting to get a camera in the first place.

Also, I just wonder how people are planning on paying for their projects if they get heated about a couple hundred bucks. I know money's important, but what does a couple hundred bucks matter to the bottom line? flame away if you have to, but this isn't an attack of any sorts. Just an observation that came to me while typing. If somebody's prepping an HD feature with their HVX then just having the camera in hand to practice with is going to be worth whatever money you have to spend and if you're shooting shorts doesn't the DVX still do really well, so why not wait until the heat over the HVX has cooled a bit?

And also I think that anywhere around $6k for a camera that can do what the HVX seems capable of is one hell of a bargain. But that's just me.

Now, before everybody digs in just let me say....happy holidays. :)

I used to work at Samy's, and it took them a while to help me understand this, but here's how it works: basically it's an unofficial "black list" that, yes, should be considered price-fixing, but isn't. Essentially, if a manufacturer catches you violating their minimum price, they blacklist you. They could say, "Hey, guess what, you're not getting any more XLH1's for a year!" or they could say, "Oops! We're withdrawing our entire dealer authorization!" Some of the manufacturers are nastier about this than others. Sony is by far the most ridiculous of the major brands. Canon is also fairly fanatic. Nikon slightly less so. It's a bit of a racket, if you ask me.

i wonder what do they lose if the dealers discount their inventory, its their money -- is it brand value they are worried about?

DVX Selling for HVX

DVX Selling for HVX

Well, i dont have much money and just as soon as i finish editing a music video project i just finished shooting last weekend, i plan on selling my DVX to have the extra money needed to buy or even pre-order the HVX. If a job comes in while i am waiting...what can i do?

Now, EVS has been the store i buy everything from as they are very local to me and always have the cheapest price on the those panasonic dvm63mq tapes i use on my dvx...so most likely i would want to buy from them...and in cash.

but regardless of whom to buy from, is there anywhere that would help a dvxuser sell their precious DVX??
maybe a trade-in special?
or if someone comes into one of the more personalized places like EVS looking for a good price on a DVX and will buy one used, maybe a referral to someone like me selling one instead of just pushing the dvxB?

Whatcha think?

Hi warlock, we do that all the time, it's either trade-in, consignment, or a referral. I actually have a list of 4 people waiting for my 100A's to come from a rental in February, and I can get your info to them. Just email me your number, and I will forward it, or come in and show us the camera. We are also going to have a small bulletin board in the lobby for things like that, where you can post your used gear for sale.

Don't know. But I do know of one Canon dealer who terminated his dealership with Canon over the way B&H was discounting the XL2. B&H was selling over-the-counter for less than my friend's dealer cost. I'm sure Canon doesn't want to see that happening again.

The same pricing issues happen in the mid-upper end audio world also (Onkyo, Denon, etc). All priced almost exactly the same for a given model. If you find it priced lower it is most likely from an unauthorized seller (grey market) and the manufacturer won't honor any warranty claims. It says this explicately, right on their web sites.

I'm currently on Rush's list this time, and I'm stickin with it, but I've bought DVXs from Abel (NY) and B&H. I rent stuff at Abel also and really like their customer service. Abel also let me bring my computer in to capture Varicam footage on their 1200A for a great price.

Wow I try and go away to a little island for a day and come back and look what i miss. Wowzers.

The battle of the Dealers.

At least everyone here fighting have a history with DVXusers, some a long history, some short. Rush has been with DVXuser since day 1, Jerrod, besides having a really cool name :) has been around forever as well, (and somehow roped an exclusive with those Panther heads.. man those are sweet). Spec-Comm is the new guy, rolling in with the best pricing with a deposit and some cool ideas for products, but no real track record as of yet.

I guess the test will be when the cameras ship, to see how each one does in getting the cameras out and following up with support. Im sure we will hear about it.

But man is this good.. you dont see stuff like this happen anywhere else.. I appreciate all you three, Rush, Andrew and Jerrod stepping up to bat here and really showing your customers your dedication to your customers. I should rename this thread to the United Nations of Dealers :)

Hey Rush, your approach is awesome. Just based on the entertainment value of this thread alone, I'm upping my order with you (I'll e-mail you regarding the additional gear).

And at the risk of shooting myself in my "financial" foot, I expect that within about three months (or less) of receiving my gear, I won't remember or care whether I paid a few dollars more (or less) than the lowest price out there ... I will, however, always remember great service and good people to deal with.
