Where is the 4K Ninja Star recording box?

Still waiting for someone to step up and release an external recorder like the Ninja Star but for 4K. Don't need a battery-killing, price-gouging monitor with it---just a simple portable box that takes affordable memory cards and has an HDMI output.

Been waiting 2+ years now.

If some company released one the demand would be so high they probably couldn't keep them in stock. They'd have to hire extra people to work 24/7 at the factory to produce them.

What is wrong with these people?

I love it when some guys think they are geniuses because they thought of something. them and million other people haha. and they are usually experts in sales as well. that's too funny....

WTF?

So, based on that post of mine, you literally think that I believe I was the first person who thought of something like a 4K Ninja Star? Really? That's sad.

I'm not a sales expert either, that was hyperbole about a company working 24/7 to fill orders--although it could happen. I do think there's a market.

How much would I pay? Off the top of my head, I'd pay $800-$1000.

A better question is: why not make it?

I could tell you all the reasons, but I am not going to. But they exist.

Thanks for the tease. I have no idea what the reasons are but my gut tells me it has to do with profit margins.

If you'd pay up to $1K for one, you could just get a BM 7" monitor/recorder for $895. Up to 4K/30p.

I know it's probably not convenient and the whole point is to have a small footprint, but just saying.

Hypothetically speaking, an OEM could render an external "box only" useless by just upping its own internal recording bit rate. It wouldn't even have to be an exact match, just something to make the investment much less worthwhile.

Come to think of it, the OEM's are the main villains here. GH4 can record 1080p at 200 Mbps but not 4K? That just screams product crippling.

BTW, NX1 was hacked to up its bit rate from 80 Mbps to 160 (and that was in H265 too). Maybe the appearance of the new V60 and V90 SDXC cards will force more OEM's to match these specs.

I second the OP.
I would buy a small 4k recorder, provided that it's not power hungry and light enough. A small box that can stay permanently attached to the camera.
The old good nanoflash comes to my mind. That design was brilliant.

I suspect that Panasonic squeezed everything they could out of the GH4 image processor, so going beyond what it currently does is going to require a lot more processing power.

Yes they could have given us 4K 200 Mbps but that would have made SD card compatibility a nightmare when the camera came out 2 years ago. Things are different now, where high performance SD cards are becoming pretty common.

I am still hoping that the GH5 has 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording, which might require a 200 Mbps data-rate. ( otherwise I am going to stick with the GH4 and wait for somebody to deliver 10-bit internal with a mirrorless camera )
