Where is Panasonic in this game?

Well as far as the FS700 goes, we have no idea when the 4k upgrade will be released, and at what price. Then, we have no idea on if it's a Sony only 4k recorder and again, at what price? So, $8000 for a 1080p cam with ND's(which should have been there in the first place) and 3gSDI (which should have been there in the first place), the ability to share profiles and awesome overcrank. A 4k recorder with the possibility of RAW? Really, what will that final cost be? Then start adding up your media storage to handle that. When all said and done, you might be looking at $20,000 knowing Sony.

Yes. In the look good while shooting awards :p
i wouldnt mind getting the fs700 though. Epic specs.
Is it though? Really? I dunno, I'd want to see some footage. What I'm seeing right now is an FS100 that adds ND filters and a burst slow-mo mode, and an SDI port. Sure those are nice upgrades from the FS100, but ... other than that... what does it really add? It's still an 8-bit 4:2:0 AVCHD camcorder.

There's the prospect of some future raw upgrade and 4k output, which is enticing, but -- at what cost? Until we know that, it's about as real to us as the HVX200 Hydra was. What if the 4K recorder is $15,000 and the raw output module is another $15,000? Is it still epic at that point? Or is it an FS100 that has an ND filter and a burst slow-mo feature?

I dunno, I was really amped on the FS700 up until this morning when I saw that it's another FS100. I really don't like using the FS100. The FS700 fixes some things (like having a real monitor output instead of HDMI, and having ND filters so you don't have to do the stupid filter-juggle-dance) but ... it's two and a half times more expensive than the AF100, it finally offers features comparable, and it still has that ridiculous viewfinder-tube design. I think the prospect of sharper imagery is enticing (if they designed it right, it could have C300 sharpness out the HD-SDI) and I think the C300 is in trouble, but until we know what the 4K & raw upgrade path is, I'm not really seeing anything all that epic.

Maybe I'm most disappointed because I'd heard that it had 1080/240fps and I was ready to recommend one of these this morning to FlightLine for our high-speed cam, because really an Epic is the only barely-affordable high-speed camera out there, but ... seeing as it's a burst-only and limited to 8 seconds, that makes it unusable for what we'd need, so... back to the Epic...

Just buy 2 and alternate every 8 seconds! ;)

Seriously, I'm with you. Not that big of an update for twice the price.

If 4k out of the FS700 is only available through a proprietary Sony recorder, that would be a total slap in the face to the people who purchase it.

Granted there are no 3G-SDI recorders for 4k yet, but at long as any third party is possible outside of a proprietary.

Plus, there's no option for 4k in the SDI standard, so that's a big question mark.

Well, but, thing is, 3G-SDI is based on SMPTE 424M, and SMPTE 424M has no provision for 4K. So I don't think there will be any standardized way to get 4K out of a standard 3G-SDI port. Not only that, but the existing 4K capture cards out there (Kona 3G and Blackmagic) require *two* 3G-SDI ports to transport 4K.

So if it's gonna go out over a 3G-SDI port, it has to be some sort of proprietary format.

I expect this camera to set you back when the 4k is available of $16-20,000.
Sony has an SR-R4 4K recorder that costs around $13k or so. So between the camera and that recorder (if indeed it could use that recorder) you'd be looking at around $20k, plus the cost of memory. A 256gb SRMemory card is about $4,000.

quite true, barry. the slow mo burst is really enticing though :)
cant wait for panasonic's version
my thoughts are
50mbps 10 bit 4:2:2 avc long-G
with optional avchd 2.0 (for hi-speed burst recordings similar to sony's at least)
recording media: doesnt matter. p2 or sd
improved DR & resolution.

with 'maybe' optional 3g sdi for future recorders...

im very ure panasonic would have something awesome. they had more than a year to plan it after releasing af100.

maybe a avcultra cam for 4k and another avc longG for FHD

I don't know what Panasonic could cook up in a new AF series camera or if they even might do a HPX style camera with larger sensor. If they would go for the HPX I see no reason to not go for S35 sensor size and all the bells and whistles that is inside the HPX250. Seems to be feasible if they have the ability to make large sensors other than m4/3 sized ones.

An S-35 sensor camera with the AVC-intra 100 codec recording to P2 would be a killer combo. I wouldn't be surprised if Panny has one up their sleeve. But what lens mount would it have?

None. A user changeable mount.

Isn't Panasonic too heavily invested in micro 4/3 to dump it now? It would also ramp up the very nice price point they've been sitting at. Besides, do we really *need* another super 35 camera? That market seems quite saturated already.

No one is doing 10bit internal recording yet.

Do that In a s35 sensor with p2 reliability and the Panny mojo like others have said, Panasonic alone would kill in that segment.

I believe Panasonic will announce the new AF--- with P2 on the 5th, according to sources. I also believe we will see no Panasonic S35 cameras announced. I know we will see AVC-Ultra, which means internal 12-bit 4K at some point, but not expecting a palmcorder to support this or the camera would most likely need 12V power source. I also don't expect a large sensor ENG camera form factor, much as I'd like to see a new Cine-Varicam.

So, if Panasonic has 4K record capability with AVC-Ultra, what type of camera, what size sensor, what price point?

I have been considering a new cam this year. A "AF200" with P2, Intra codec, and an improved way to use my Canon glass would probably light my fire. I thought that the day that the Af100 came out.
