GH3 Where are the GH3s?

Every online store I check, they are out of stock but will ship when it comes in. So are they shipping them out on a regular basis, or do I have to wait 2 months?

I got a notice about a week ago that B&H Photo had them in but I had not made up my mind. They probably only lasted a day or two. Now the 28th for more.

Does Panasonic have limited resources or do they do this on purpose? Or some problems with the production?
It's strange that they are still not widely available yet...

It's like this with every GH - if anything, the distribution of the GH2 was even worse... months of nothing and sporadic supplies. I don't know if Panny is doing it on purpose, but last time, there was some question about how the earthquake in Japan affected production and so on. I don't know what the excuse is for the GH3, but if they are going slow because they are trying to fix various issues (f.ex. EVF), then if anything, I'd praise them; of course, most likely they're not fixing anything, so who knows. It's possible that Panny is waiting until a competitor comes along (maybe Sony?) and releases a camera that takes over all the GH3 demand - by slowing down the GH3 supply, they allow the customers to hold onto their money and buy the competitor instead of the GH3. Point is, there is no way to know what Panny is thinking, unless you're working for them and are the one planning out the strategies.

My GH3 was made in China. My 35-100mm was made in China. My 12-35mm was made in Japan... Go figure. Yet, my 12-35 was missing the lens hood! However, Panny is sending me one. In other words, they can't use Japanese earthquake and its lingering effects as an excuse.

Ordered the GH3 from Adorama on Jan. 29, got it last Thursday when Adorama had them in stock for 24 hours... So far all seems well, but I've got a lot of learning to do!

Other companies do this, as well.

I think it's the Cabbage Patch Doll syndrome; scarcity causes a frenzy and results in a "must have" obsession. The only way to resolve the obsession is to eventually buy one. I'm guessing they have the data on this and perhaps know people, on the whole, hold out to eventually buy the product. Maybe if you give the customer choice of take it or leave it with ample supply, it doesn't create a buzz across the internet.

Kind of like how the only celebrities that get noticed are the ones where there's a problem, versus someone who just blends into the background and doesn't get as much exposure to advance their career.

Yep, frustrating to say the least. If I had a job next week requiring a new cam, do I get a 5d mark3 or nikon d600 because I have no idea if panasonic will make me wait for a month? Yeah more money and a whole can of worms when it comes to new sets of glass... But when you rely on having equipment when the job is there... So ready to drop money on a gh3 and a couple lenses, but just not sure because of the backorder.

Also the issue I see with the display shutting off after a few seconds. Can they fix that garbage with a firmware update? There's no doubt that is a MUST HAVE!! I don't see Canon or Nikon doing that BS!

Ok my rant is out of the way now.

Most of the time I'd stop the camera from recording anyway of I wanted to change the settings, so that isn't to big of deal.

Not sure if this is what you mean but when my GH2 did that it made me crazy too, until I realized there was a high/low sensitivity setting (which cured the problem for me).
I think the GH3 is like that too (I'll let you know after Wednesday's UPS delivery), but from the GH3 manual:

"About the eye sensor automatic switching
When [LVF/Monitor Auto] of [Eye Sensor] (P62) in
the [Custom] menu is set to [ON] and your eye or an
object is brought close to the viewfinder, the display
automatically switches to the viewfinder display.
Sensitivity of the eye sensor can be set to [HIGH] or
[LOW] with [Sensitivity].
A [LVF]/[Fn5] button
B Eye sensor
• Eye sensor might not work properly depending on the shape of your eyeglasses, the way you
hold the camera, or bright light shining around the eyepiece. Switch manually in that case.
• The eye sensor is disabled during motion picture playback and slide show."

The display Does NOT shut off, the info settings is what disappears after about 5 seconds, all you need to do is hit the display button and it comes right back up. It is a slight issue that while should be fixed is nothing that you cannot keep track of just by making sure you start off with correct settings before pressing record and at worst press the display button again just to make sure....

You can also just tap the screen.

jsut got my gh3 today in australia, it is now on backorder again till end of feb so supply seems to be universal.

As I said in another thread - since it came out, it's been in stock at Amazon UK.
But then that's because Panasonic have decided to charge £1300 for it over here. So nobody is buying.

Yeah it sounds like its not that big of deal, I actually have not worked with the info display off screen, I usually come back to it and check this and that periodically. I just didn't want to have to physically press something in the middle of an interview. I'm sure it would be fine. So does every bit of info disappear? like the red record icon, audio levels and such?

I guess I better just get on the ball and preorder one and hope it comes within a couple of weeks.
