Whee! Earthquake!

I jumped up into my spydet stance grabbing onto my monitors and looking back at the stairs asking myself if I should bolt out of the place... MAN my loft was swaying like a MOFO!!! I will sleep with my thumb in my mouth tonight... haha... crazy SHIZZLE!!! the biggest I had felt before this one was the 4.3 from like a few months ago... whoa!!! crazy stuffs... I will meditate even more trying to stop the big one from now on.

Actually, this was fun. I kinda thought to myself "why not have the big one right now, and get it over with" seeing as there's so little damage. They say "the big one" here in Cali San Andrea fault would be like an 8 or so. If we got it, we wouldn't have to wait nervously for one, done deal and over with. I wonder: would there be much damage from an 8 here in Cali? I know that it's not proportional - so a jump from a 4 to a 5 is not like 20% stronger the way the Richter scale works, but a lot more. Today we had like a 5.4, so an 8 would be like way, way, way bigger... on second thought, maybe they should wait on that one a bit longer - like another 10,000 years :)

I dont even know what this means.

The '94 Northridge Earthquake killed 72 people and injured 12,000 more. It also caused $12.5 BILLION in damage. It was a 6.8. An 8.0 would be 40x the size of the Northridge Earthquake.

Yeah, it might do some damage.

40x? Ouch. The recent China one was like, what, about 7.8 or 8 or so? Tragic of course, but from what I read, it wouldn't play out like that here in Cali at all - there'd be at most 2000 dead, depending on the time it struck. Of course, every death is a tragedy, no question, but still... compared to China... wow, not as humongous. Anyhow, that would definitely be too freaky, so yeah, hold off on that.

Unless it's along the fault line.

Considering the damage done to both buildings and freeways, an 8.0 centered anywhere in LA city would bring So Cal to a halt. EVERY freeway closed and possibly demolished, at least at one point on them. We dont have the density of China, but it would be VERY ugly.

Although one WGA or SAG strike can do just as much damage to our economy.

I lived in Northridge when the the '94 hit and I was working in an SFX shop and was in charge of plaster molds. We had several thousand in storage - all necessary - and over half of them broke. My daily work routine was to make molds NON-STOP all day and that barely kept up with what was needed. I then had to boost output to replace the broken molds. I quit 4 days later.

That was no earthquake! Some guy at Universal fired up the SENSURROUND for ol' times sake!

I was almost crushed by 6ft bookcases during the Whittier Narrows quake (5.9), missed by 20 seconds. After that I chopped them down to 3 ft!!

Build a giant steadicam and put your bed or sofa in it, and you won't feel the next one!

Depends. The one yesterday, while highly noticeable if in a building - with things falling off shelves. lights swaying, and pictures swaying - you cant miss it. But yesterday's want even noticeable in a car due to suspension and shocks. (And I'm specifically referring to these two effects in Burbank, where I was. At the epicenter could be a different story.)

But in something like the Northridge where freeways were falling, then you are bound to notice something, but it would feel similar to driving over the 10>405 interchange during traffic. It would feel a bit wonky, but not like someone is shaking a film camera to simulate an earthquake.
