It takes some workarounds for cameras that don't have defeatable AGC and manual level controls, but the advantage is that sound is already embedded in the h.264 file with the picture, so sync sound isn't a problem.

The advantage to recording to a separate recorder is that DSLR cameras still have weak audio circuits, and the external recorder will most likely get a cleaner recording if used properly.

* you get an easier match with pluraleyes and similar software
* if the batteries of a H4n die while recording, the file being recorded will be completely erased; if you've got that H4n plugged to a DSLR that's also recording, you'll have all the audio there, up until the point where the H4n batteries died; handy for interviews and things like that

I just bought a cable (with pad) that will go from the Line Out jack of my Tascam DR-100 audio recorder into my Canon 60D (which has manual audio controls). This will allow for a better recording directly onto the footage, and if the editor is fine with the quality, then that's one less extra step. If not, there are always the 24bit 48k WAV files from the DR-100 that can be synced up and used instead. And as NormanBates mentioned, it makes for a nice backup as well.
