What's the "1D MKIV"?

And, just to be clear, the 1D Mk IV is nothing more than a wish list for us right now. We do not know if Canon will implement full-fledged video hardware on it or not. There may be a 1D Mk IV coming that has the same type of video as the 7D and 5D. The only thing we know is that Canon's Tim Smith said that they understand what video people want, that the current hardware isn't going to do it, and that if they deliver the proper hardware, it'll happen in a "more expensive" product. So that makes us wonder if the 1D Mk IV wouldn't indeed be that "more expensive product". It might, it might not.

Canon have really delivered this year so I'm pretty confident that the motion picture specs are gonna be very good. I'm hoping for codec, rolling shutter and aliasing improvements.

I wonder how much this thing is gonna cost? I was under the impression that this thing wasn't coming out till February 2010. But if it's a decent price, and shipping in November, perhaps it would be wise to hold my 7D purchase another 4 - 6 weeks?

Based on a post by Jim and Graeme over a reduser, it may not be the Digic 4's lack of video prowess holding back the 5D and 7D.

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=36337

It is quite likely that a whole new sensor is needed, and there is nothing to suggest Canon is about to release a stills camera that can shoot full sensor 24FPS sustained (I mean, the 7D can only shoot at 8FPS sustained for what, 12 frames? The 1DS isn't much faster is it?). Graeme also mentions here that line skipping is one of the ways they reduce skew on the Canon sensor. If correct (and I have no reason to doubt him), not only would Canon have to drastically improves the performance of the sensor in framerate, but also in read/reset time just to equal the current skew.

I would expect that we will have to wait for a full price Canon video camera to see the pristine image quality people are hoping for in the mythic 1D update.

I reckon around six grand street price, I have to stop spending.

It's rumoured that the new 1D will have 2 digic V processors.

Dude, if you can't afford the 5D, then forget about the 1D, which is even higher-end. The 1D will be around three times the price, or more. Not for budget filmmakers. :)

Woah! $6K? Three times the price? Count me out! I'm barely able to afford the 7D with a lens lol :)

Perhaps I should just hit the order button on the 7D within the next few days cause even the Scarlet looks like it's not gonna be the "3K for $3K" as was first said by RED. I've read some places that a Scarlet (not the fixed lens one) will cost $7K to $10K in the end all kitted out...guess the 7D is gonna be the champion for really low budget indie filmmakers for a while. Gotta admit, I'm very impressed with what I've seen so far!

This is entirely true.

I wasn't saying, in the posts Chip mentioned, that the scaling/hardware was the *only* problem. Obviously, yes, sensor readout is a huge issue. What I was saying is that the way the chip gets read out (the pixel binning) and the Digic processing is what leads to the awful results in video. The still performance is fantastic. The basic capability for a great image is there. So what they do, to get video from it, is faulty. That's where the problem is, and it's a hardware issue, not something that's going to be fixed in firmware.

Graeme also mentions here that line skipping is one of the ways they reduce skew on the Canon sensor. Canon denies line-skipping, they instead say they are using pixel-binning. Either way, it means reading out less than the full sensor data, and the less you read, the faster the rate you can read the chip at.

Canon could have read a full frame rate, video-resolution image out of the chip, I have no doubt of that -- but they would have had to use cropping to do it (like Red does for 2K and 3K), and if they did that then the field of view would shrink, and the shallow DOF would go away.

Most likely correct. And the 1D presumed to be $6,000 or so, there is a possibility that that will be priced high enough to allow for the appropriate technology to be incorporated.

It's still a rumor, but Canon are supposed to be doing an announcement tomorrow (October 20th) with the camera being released in January, before the winter Olympics. So my guess is specs in ~24 hours, then teaser pics and footage through November and December and by January it's the new hotness...maybe, and mostly in the sports photography world. For us it's probably better as a guide to 'what's coming next year', given the price.

Interesting week...Sony rumored to announce 2 new EX camera things tomorrow, Canon expected to announce the 1Div, and RED with a big announcement on the 30th (which Jim Jannard has strongly hinted will have pricing and release dates).

Looking forward to the anniuncemet and hoping there aren't any enticing video improvements. The price tag sounds like
it might get steep.

why hope for mediocre? we've had plenty of that hoping for greatness.

It won't be cheap but the technology will eventually trickle down to the 5D MKIII and 7D MKII for those who can wait.

-sob- I'm tired of spendin' money.

The end of this month is going to be a jaw clencher. So many announcements.

Nah, I want something good. The GH1 and 7D have opened my eyes to what can be done, but -- they ain't good. So now I'm looking for something good.

Um, don't take this the wrong way, BG, but my clients seem to think both the 7D and GH1 are pretty damn good. You may not, of course, and you're entitled to your opinion.

And the 1DMkIV ("Jesus Camera") will be interesting to me only so far as the price point goes. If it's in the same range as the current 1D-series, but doesn't offer significant (and I mean really significant) upgrades in picture quality, than it's a non-starter for me.

Camera purchases for me are driven by client request and end-delivery needs. Between the EX1 and two 7Ds, I've got my bases covered.

But as I've always said, more choices are always a good thing, and between the tools we have and those coming in the near future, there's a lot to be excited about.

Yep, I didn't mean it was the *only* problem (re: reduser post) but a weak link at this time that the cam could improve from without touching the sensor meaning the sensor is way better than the hardware / processing going on in cam.

Didn't Jim Jannard say the Scarlet release announcement was coming in a couple weeks?

Yeah. Should be any day now. I'm just dreading the price. It'll either be too high considering what we have now and I'll want one or too low for what it is and I'll want two.

=(
