What's the "1D MKIV"?

I've seen this model number, "1D MKIV", thrown around here and there. I tried to find specs on it, but to no avail. I'm not interested in buying it or anything, but I'm really curious to know what it is. Anyone here know anything about it?

Haha!

Does that mean that if I were to buy it, I'd have to go to Jordan and find a 1000 year old Crusader who would be sitting there with a wall of camera's behind him...and if I chose wrong, my skin would melt off and my eyeballs would pop out? :P

It's rumoured to be the first camera with a video mode powered by Digic V (5) which is based around a video core. So it will be the first 'professional' standard video DSLR useable for pro-work and broadcast without any fears of moire, aliasing, etc.

It will also be %^£$^%£ expensive.

First and foremost, the EOS-1D Mark IV is mostly rumor. It's common sense that it is about due for an update, but we don't really know anything about what Canon has up its sleeve. That said, a little research turned up the following.

1D MKIV refers to the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV, the successor to the currently available EOS-1D Mark III. What exactly the 1D MKIV will do, however, remains veiled behind multiple curtains of secrecy - even to Canon engineers, according to the rumors.

It is expected that the camera will carry Canon's new image processing chip, the DIGIC V. This chip is rumored to have been significantly redesigned to allow much better video processing.

The rumor mill has churned out these specs:
16mp
12fps
1.3x (APS-H) sensor
1080p Video (24p/25p 30p 60p)

The rumor mill has failed to churn out a price point. The 1D MKIII goes for $3999.99 body only.

My guess is that it'll be aimed at pro sports photographers with a shooting rate of 12fps and comparatively low res 16MP sensor. But if that's the case shouldn't it have the 'S' designation (for speed / sports) after the 1D - i.e. 1Ds?

16MP with no line skipping and a codec improvement would be close to RED but with better low light capability and no heavy lifting.

And then will come the 5D Mark III with Digic V based on the technology trickle down from the pro camera, and you'll have to start saving all over again ;)

I think the 1.3x crop on the 1D would work well, it's closer to S35 DOF. The only downside is it will be heavier and larger than the 5D and yeah pricier. I'm hoping to start shooting my feature in february so the timing is perfect.

Not sure that's how that works...the current 1D MKIII does 10fps. The 1Ds MKIII does 5fps, but on a 21.1MP sensor.

Hey, as long as we're talking rumors, I'm thinking a 7D mk2 by this time next year with dual Digic V's!! It actually makes sense if you think about it. I should prefaced this with a "heard it from a reliable source" (whatever that means) then I can set the internet ablaze with rumors :)

Dan Brown's new book just came out. It's a sequel to the Da Vinci code, and Robert Langdon, aka tom hanks, is in search of the Canon 1D mkIV. He travels to NAB, and other photo/video conventions, all the while being chased by Nikon and Panasonic officials. It's a real page turner.

I'd rather read that than the actual book itself.

I hear the Bourne Identity series has run out of books so the next one will be set inside the Canon factory, where some Panasonic spies try to find out what makes the 5D better than the GH1. Meanwhile they get shot at by Canon fanboys, who run a drugs den somewhere in America, fronting it with an innocent looking website called DVXUser.com which pretends to be a Panasonic fan site

Just to be clear, the 1D has a 1.3x (APS-H) crop sensor. The 1Ds has a full-frame sensor, and the Mark III has the same sensor as the 5D Mark II.
