What's after the 50mm...?

I'm using the Canon 50mm a lot lately on my 7D. New to the photography world.

I really like the quality of images that the 50mm produces...but sometimes I get frustrated with having to be so close to the subject to catch a good and sharp shot.
I want to add another prime to my bag...but being so inexperienced I don't know which one yet. I am setting aside a $3-400 budget for this lens. What do you guys suggest so that I can read up on it.

I want to be able to stand a good 20-25feet away and still catch a decent large image of the subject.

thanx!!

Maybe a Tamron 17-50 2.8 non-VC would be a good next lens for you. If you shoot handheld, you will need to upgrade to the VC version to reduce micro jitters but if you have some kind of support rig like a Spiderbrace or a monopod, you should be golden.

That lens will give you a nice wide angle at 17mm and everything in between at a relatively fast aperture. Hope that helps!

Are you talking about photography or filmmaking?

I assume that, by "large image of the subject," you mean close-up. If so, a 17-50 won't help you much. The Canon 85mm 1.8 is another lens people seem to love and fits within your budget.

I think your best bet is to go to a local camera shop and tryout different lenses.

Just bought the 85mm 1.8, very pleased with it so far. Filming with it at the weekend.

Looks like you want a zoom lens, for that I would suggest the Canon 55-250mm lens. The negative with that lens is the variable aperture and slow speed of it. But if you are shooting with plenty of daylight then that is a drawback you would never have to worry about.

Personally it is on the of the best rated lenses that exist for these cameras.
