What the ... hail?!

This past Sunday we had a nutso hailstorm kinda come out of nowhere. Golfball, baseball, and softball sized hail were reported. My wife and I were fortunate at the lack of hail that fell near us, but I know it hit a couple Users out there. Here's a video someone took of the hail hitting their pool. Kinda long, but gets pretty intense.

We have more storms on the way today.

I hate the weather here.

It sucks when lives and/or property are lost. That said, I love the weather here. :)

A few iPhone pics taken minutes after the hail stopped falling.

that's crazy. hopefully they had theirs cars in the garage. on saturday i went to film my friend's wedding in upstate SC. when i got there, we had hail the size of quarters coming down all over. it never hails here--and it really sucks for outdoor weddings. it stopped coming down about an hour before the ceremony, so everything was fine.

then i got back home to charlotte about two days later, and it was hailing here too. maybe it's the day after tomorrow.

Wow. Living on this coast has some nice points... I've never seen anything like that, and I find it hard to imagine, even with the pictures.

Hilarious how one of them says something like "your car is in the driveway" at the top of the video. That happened to us when we were visiting some friends for a barbecue. By the time we realized how bad the hail was getting, it was too dangerous to move two of the three cars from the driveway into the completely empty garage.

What's really crazy is how, over the next couple of days, you'll see a bunch of out of town hail damage auto and roof repair companies descend on the place you live like locusts. We had a narrow band of hail come through our town two years ago and companies from Florida, Texas and the mid-West were here for months afterward. In that time, millions of dollars changed hands between insurance companies, home and business owners and these transient businesses. I know of very few homeowners who didn't get an entirely new roof out of the deal. We had a roof and two cars damaged - though we used local businesses for all the repair work.

I did sound for a modern marvels episode called "ICE"... we went to a state farm test facility where they blast all sorts of things with hail... in an effort to accurately predict the repair costs of various materials (cars, roofs, etc.)

Still... I gotta' agree with Terry. I hate to say it... and of course I don't want anybody to be hurt in any way by weather... but the midwest storms are really cool to behold (so long as nobody's hurt).

watching that video makes me wonder about cattle and horses in the area. Man, what a nightmare for anyone with livestock or pets outside.

We had something like this happen 3 years ago.... I was pushing the roof window like crazy because it was about to collapse. Millions and millions of euros lost, Farm lands were completly useless that year...Our car marked forever... The photos I took priceless... though I lost them in a hard drive crash..

Snow is cold wet... and slippery... if I can sit in a cabin and not do anything, I don't mind snow... if I have to live and move about, I mind it.
