5600K Preset Not to my liking

Sorry Jan. I'm not trying to make you answer again. I was just trying to correct my previous post. From your answer you didn't seem to understand what I said about white being subjective and CT being the CT. CT is a measure of blackbody radiation and is constant.

I'm just curious now about how many other cameras don't see full daylight as above 5000k on the manual balance. I don't think most people actually look at the color temp readout in the viewfinder. They just throw the switch and see the color change in the monitor and move on.

The color temp readout is a valuable tool in getting the look you want out of the camera since a 200 degree change can make a big difference in the how the scene looks.

I really don't want to take this camera in until I hear from someone that there is a fix for the preset problem. Why take it in twice or have to leave it there for a long time.

Since it's taken so long to address this issue I'm assuming it's more than just a software fix or it would have been done by now. Not to beat a dead horse but I'm still shocked that the factory could have shipped cameras like this and no one notice.
It's really been too long for them to acknowledge and fix this.

Actually I think you would find that most people shooting with a HPX would be, maybe you should give people more credit.

Take your 500 outside. Point it at your white card with the white card in full midday sun.
White balance. Whats your color temp? On mine it will not go any higher than 4900k.
I just tried this, it reads out as 5800k. Pointed it at a cloudy/blue sky mix and got 7400. This was at 1:18 p.m.[/quote]

I can consistently get 5600 when I am outside using AWB then locking it into one of my user presets. That's not an issue on my cam... it's that the built in 5600 preset is different than the 5600 I can acquire...

Yes the 5600 preset is off, no doubt about that. Manual white balance works perfectly well. Someone suggested just getting a 5600 manual white balance and leaving that permanently on Ach or Bch and forgetting the 5600k preset. I think that's great advice as an interim workaround until it gets properly fixed.

Okay, I need a volunteer for the 5600 preset fix. Keep in mind that the problem is made more confusing by which lens you are using, so you would need to send in your lens as well.

Send me a PM.

Thanks,

Jan

I use Fujinon XA17x7.6BRMM58B. The WB in manuell mode is perfekt! I will send a test this night.

Hi Cocoa, We don't need a test, we understand the problem completely. I was looking for a volunteer with a camera in the US that we can run the "fix" on. Because it is lens dependent as the Canon lenses are cooler than the Fujinons it makes a difference.

Thanks for the offer, but we are one step ahead of this.

Best,

Jan

So I read through this entire thread and have seen people getting so mad, which is almost comical. It's not until this page (7th page) that Barry finally says "well, just don't use it". Why get so pissed off about it guys? C'mon, Everything can't always be perfect, so make the best of what you have and keep on keeping on. Don't sweat the small things. Jan said they're working on it and they have a fix, so no need to sweat anymore....

I'm sure everyone knows what Jan's saying, but for those who don't, I'm pretty sure she's not endorsing Canon over Fujinon; she's saying that the Fujinon renders a "warmer" image than the Canon and that the Canon renders and that therefore the Canon renders a "cooler" image than the Fujinon.

[/back to your regularly scheduled program]

Well, I'm not saying "accept a fault in your $20,000 camera"! I'm saying "don't use it until it's fixed." We still expect that the product will perform as it's designed to, but come on -- recognize that there's a fault, and work around it until a fix is implemented. And it sounds like Jan has a fix now.

Until then, the manual white balance works perfectly, so use that. If you want a preset, a temporary workaround would be to program a proper manual 5600k white balance into channel "A" or "B" so you could always switch to that whenever you need it.

Just missed this flurry of activity as I was on a shoot. Not with the 500.
A film shoot. If you've never shot film you owe it to yourself to go rent or borrow an old film camera and have at it. I wish I could get those old C-mount Angenieux lenses to work right on modern cameras.
But I digress...
Question1: Jan you don't have a 500 to mess around with?

Question 2: Can the color rendition be that different between these lenses? I've shot with a lot of glass and I've seen some issues but nothing like this.

Question 3: If it is that different how can Panasonic not have noticed this? Weren't they tested on a bench at some time in the prototype process.

Question 4: Can we turn off the CAC without voiding the warranty?

Question 5: Can we get specs on the modulation transfer function on these lens to see where they actually fall in spectrum between sd lens and true 60,000 dollar hidef lenses?

Also for everyone else here's web site that has a lot of great info on photography in general. It's on of my favs.

So... whats happening with this. The last I heard we were a week away from a fix. Which was like 2 weeks ago.

Well... I'm sorry to be a pest but this really is a fundamental flaw in the camera and is very important that it get fixed. So important that I feel that if they don't fix it we should be able to return the cameras at least for credit on another product.

This thread is sounding like the senate investigation into Irag war..

Barry's right.. there are easy work arounds discussed here and elsewhere - setting a manual preset for permanant referal or using the 3200k w/ an 85 filter are two..

And I've been shooting film since 1966, and those Angeniux 12-120s aren't as good as you might remember, so careful waht you wish for (although, admittedly, I would sure like to be able to use my Cooke 10.4-52)...

I haven't as yet received a positive response on a fix for the preset, but then my camera is in constant use and it would be inconvenient to be without it anyway... I had hoped there would be a downloadable firmware fix, apparently not...

Since Jan posted about this a month ago and said the fix was week away taking the camera in for service when even the manufacturer does'nt know whats wrong does'nt seem like a good idea.

I just feel that a professional piece of equip should be able to do the basics. In this case it has to render a daylight scene with acceptable color on its presets without a work around. There are many times when white balancing an outdoor scene is not a good idea.
When I demoed the camera it was indoors. I never even thought about testing it outside since in all my years of shooting I've never seen a camera that was unable to render an acceptable daylight scene on preset. Tungsten yes daylight no. I really wish I had.
I've really about given up on this and am very disappointed with Panasonic. Please take it back or fix it. Sorry folks thats just the way I feel.

Actually the lens I was thinking of was the Cooke 18-100 although I think I'd need somebody else to carry it around!

I agree with you that a professional piece of equipment should work. I was suggesting you call them, not just take it in unannounced. It may be that they have a fix and just haven't updated us here.
