Scarlet 2/3" Program. Given the recent new VDSLR releases, we have decided to up the capability of the Scarlet 2/3" Fixed 8x and interchangeable models. Several new features are being added that will NOT impact the release schedule (anymore than it would have been otherwise) but it will mildly impact the pricing. We should have all the details ready by the end of this month.

Some of the new Scarlet 2/3" capabilities include:
1. Increased REDCODE data rates
2. New FLUT Color, Gamma and Sensitivity Science. Now same as EPIC.
3. More extensive modular system integration.
4. Interchangeable Lens mounts including focus and iris control of electronic RED, Canon and Nikon lenses, along with Zoom data (Scarlet 2/3" Interchangeable)
5. "Touch Focus Tracking" with electronic lens mounts and RED touchscreen LCD's (Scarlet 2/3" Interchangeable and 8x Fixed)
5. Two independent microphone level channels, balanced input circuits, 48V Phantom Power, digitized at 24-bit 48KHz.
6. GigaBit Ethernet port
7. Scaled 1080P at 60fps

To accomplish all of these, we have added one additional ASIC and four new boards to each model Scarlet 2/3".

So anyone (a good majority I am sure) that was expecting the fixed Scarlet info has to wait another month, but at least know they will be spending "mildly" more than $3500. And I doubt mildly is less than $1000.

I'm going for Stage 5: Second hand, used Scarlet a few years from now.

Glad I didn't sit around waiting for a $3500 camera. It's not for everyone but a $1500 GH1 works for me right now.

You know, it does take a lot of hard work, by smart people to release a great product. Everybody knows that.

However, it takes genius to release a great product on schedule.

There is something Steve Jobs once said, that stuck with me. He was talking about all the great products companies have in their labs, and how many don't make it to market, or only make it much later. That's when he said "real artists ship". What he meant, is that no matter how great and smart the product is, the sign of a truly great engineer or artist is to actually release a product. A product that is not ready to be released, no matter how great, is simply not a finished product, and by that fact alone tells you it's not a complete masterpiece... something is missing, something is not good enough TO SHIP. A true genius makes EVERYTHING good enough to ship.

So, no question the Red gang are a bunch of smart and hard working guys. But are they real artists?

Sure, the 5DII, the 7D, the GH1 all have shortcomings. But they shipped. And at the end of the day, would you rather have a real product with shortcomings IN YOUR HAND, or a dream product that's perfect and with no shortcomings, but exists only IN YOUR MIND? People will answer that differently... until it's time to shoot, and you can't postpone the date.

I wish the Red people the best of luck. We all love great gear. And I fervently hope, that they're real artists.

Nice quote. It takes at least some responsibility to deliver a product.
I think it is very unprofessional for a serious company to promise an announcement date just to 'announce' a new 'announcement date'. (November 31) They could have told this scarlet part weeks earlier, and keep their upcoming Epic release news as an announcement.

What a f'ing snooze this whole thing has turned into. At this point, apart from the admirable RED One and its accessories, RED's primary product by a large margin is HYPE. Like political third parties, RED was incredibly appealing and inspiring - for a time. Now as our patience grows thinner, and nothing substantial ever seems to materialize, people tend to go back to their idea of 'the lesser of two evils' or just become apathetic altogether. Lather, rinse, repeat - 'Hey, I hear X is going to announce a new camera soon! Maybe THAT will do what we want!'

Believe me, I wanted this as bad as anyone. But I also can't fool myself anymore into thinking everything's still A-OK with RED. What's worse is the never-ending all-pervasive sense that the magical camera that does everything you want is just a wee bit further around the corner. Waiting for the Godot that is the Scarlet. It's not even a camera at this point; it's a metaphor for life.
