Re: What software do you guys use to Edit...

I had never had a blue screen on my PC with Windows XP. I can run Premiere 6.5 and Premiere Pro at the same time on it. I do it now

Re: What software do you guys use to Edit...

was PC for years & years....tried a Mac and will never go back..

I will say I have really been happy with FCP4 for DVX editing. I can't speak too much on the other NLEs as I have only edited on FCP (well, a little on iMovie..but come on...really?) but I love it's integration with DVD Studio Pro... sure makes things nice and easy

Re: What software do you guys use to Edit...

I use Final Cut Pro 4.5

So easy and intuitive, stable, trustable.
All other Apple softwares are fully compatible and 100% integrated.
...a delight...

Re: What software do you guys use to Edit...

I am picking up my DVX100A this week, I only use Avid Xpress DV 3.5 Does anyone know if that works well with the camera? Thanks.

You are aware that FCP had 24p and 24pa support first, right?

Actually, Vegas did, but Blade was the first.

Re: What software do you guys use to Edit...

in-sync was running a package deal bundling Blade with the DVX when the DVX was first released, because I believe it was only NLE which could do it at the time. Price for the package? $3700. I looked at it closely but decided I didn't like Blade so much.

Re: What software do you guys use to Edit...

I should know better...BUT...

I own a G5 2.0 DP running FCP4.5.  I own a 3Ghz, PC running a Canopus DVStorm.

Both systems crash on occasion.  True the MAC doesn't "Blue Screen", but it does lock up occasionally.  My PC is pretty much rock solid, but does have its moments.

Regardless, my point.  I personally feel like whatever tool works for you these days, go with it.  Both platforms are very mature and 99% stable.  Nothing like the old days of just a few years ago.  In all seriousness, the MAC/PC debate should be a thing of the past.  They're just tools and good ones at that.

Yes.. me too, nor Blade 2. Just couldnt get the feeling. I think DVfilmaker was out as well when the camera was available, and that was about it.

Re: What software do you guys use to Edit...

I would have liked to have gotten FCP just so my resources would be more broad since a lot of folks in my town own FCP and swear by it. But, I'm on a budget, and I already have a fairly fast PC with plenty of RAM and duel 60G hard drives. So I got Adobe Premiere Pro, and I have to say, I'm impressed. It's simple enough so that in a couple of hours I learned how to do all of the things that I'll probably be doing 99% of the time. At the same time, it's extremely feature rich, so as I get more advanced, there will be lots to explore. I'm sure it has more functionality than I'll ever need.

55?  Big deal.  Ive done 87 uncompressed and heavily keyframed complete with tranfer modes and motion blur.  And yes that was all on Avid.[/quote]

Which model... and what did it cost?

I was referring to 55 uncompressed 10 bit SDI (25mb/sec streams). I think the keyframed part is a given with that many layers. I have also done more, was just giving the most recent example...

Really? I was there when Vegas announced 24p support, and we had already been using it in FCP for some time. Interesting...

Panasonic claimed Final Cut Pro was the first true 24p editing program in its literature for the DVX100, and linked to that application when it first rolled out the DVX.

Re: What software do you guys use to Edit...

Does anyone use Avid Xpress DV 3.5? If so, could you please tell me if I will have problems because I am picking up my 100A tomorrow. Since when the FCP become the most favorite NLE to use...I thought Avid is the best for big and small production.

Re: What software do you guys use to Edit...

I believe Xpress DV does not support 24P Advanced.  But, you can just shoot and edit 24P (normal F5) on a 29.97 timeline.

Final Cut Pro first hit the map when Showtime odopted it for head to tail production duties, followed closely by WGBH and CNN for field production (which lead much later to Panasonic annointing it and Thomsan / Grass Valley adopting it). The first feature film to use it was Tristar's 'Dancing at the Harvest Moon' in 2000.

ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MTV, The Discovery Channel, The Golf Channel, and ESPN before the movie industry since it was scalable, meaning that a two-thousand dollar system and a seventy-thousand dollar system used identical software, and training time was much lower than AVID, meaning that it was easy to get people editing projects that would have before been relegated to cuts bay for lack of senior editors.

FCP started to gain more popularity when AVID released AVID Express. AVID Express was purposefully changed to make it a distinct product from the higher end Film Composer style work stations, and AVID did not give it variable frame rate capability. Editor's Guild writers pointed out in '03 that:

From the point of view of the editing system, 24P video works like film. As a result, the Final Cut/Cinema Tools combination can do a good job of handling 24P-originated materials, removing 3:2 and creating native 24-fps media for editing.

But unlike the Film Composer, with the AJA Kona HD or Pinnacle Cinewave cards, Final Cut can capture 24P material directly from an HD deck and allow you to edit full-resolution, high-definition media directly. Of course, HD materials take up a huge amount of disk space and working with HD requires very fast disk arrays. But the ability to do this kind of work is one of the key benefits of Final Cut Pro's unique flexibility.

This ability to online films reduced editor time, and Avid was very slow to release true film on-line HD tools (and was still stuck with very expensive "blessed" drives).

In terms of quantity of media produced, FCP is the current big dog. In reality, you tend to see it working side by side with AVID. In the corporate world Vegas has still remained strong, although I am unaware of it editing anything theatrical (although this may be pure ignorance on my part, while FCP has been getting the Emmys and attention for work such as Scrubs, there is plenty of chance for Vegas to break out of corporate and not be much talked about).

In anycase, AVID is far from dead as editors can pick their own tools often.

Re: What software do you guys use to Edit...

I think its a question of religion. Mac or Pc - FCP or Avid.
Based on profesional experience I would choose Avid any time. If you have a tight deadline you need a stable system without last minute breakdowns. I have just seen too much of that from FCP.

Never have personally, our AVID was the one that tanked a lot, mostly because it was NT. And of course, anytime the discussion between AVID and Film Composer comes up, someone using Film Composer points out FCP running on an iMac and compares it to their Composer.

Re: What software do you guys use to Edit...

Where do you get the student edition of Vegas? I agree with other posts about P.Pro work flow ect. But I have had erratic results with the software, lock ups, ect and now seeing in print it is not just my unit, I would like to pick up the student version of Vegas and give it a run for the money. By the way, after seeing my friend use
FCP I wish I had the platform and software. But that is another story. Lack of funds here. haha.

I hated Vegas 3, but everyone loves Vegas 5. Our college book store was selling it below cost.
