What? No Firestores shipping for SIX WEEKS? Need Plan B! Help!

Waiting for free 8Gb P2 card and ordered a 100GB Firestore last week and
received this
in an e-mail from the vendor today:

" Panasonic has advised us that there is a major back order situation on FS100
FireStores due to
unprecedented demand. No more will be shipped now until the end of January."

P2 cards are available for rent but we're unable to download them in the field. We
have a MacBookPro
(which doesn't accept P2 cards) and anyway has Final Cut Express, not Final Cut
Pro.

Nobody seems to rent Firestores around here. We can't afford to rent all the P2
cards that we'd need to
shoot and bring them back to the Final Cut Pro system that
is far from the location.

Is there any way to use the MacBookPro into a Lacie external drive? I read once
that somebody used an
early version of i-Pod (which had Firewire) to record HD footage. We might be able
to get the use of one of
those. Does anybody know how to record HVX-200 HD (72024P) to an i-Pod?

Any ideas at all would be appreciated. Thanks!

Your options are

1) Take a chance with CitiDisk HD (but I have yet to hear a favorable report about it)

2) Contact every vendor until you find FS-100 (there has to be at least one in stock somewhere in US). Spec-Comm even had a $1799 special on several units in stock.

3) Consider renting from a distant source. Where are you located? I do rent my gear with proof of insurance (not a pro rental house) but I am certain there are rental houses that would ship you a rental unit-- again with pre-payment and proof of insurance.

If you don't have or cannot source a PCMCIA / CardBus slot equipped Mac, I'd recommend sourcing an equipped Windows XP laptop for batching of your footage from a few four or eight GB P2 cards.

You'd only need to purchase one application (PC version of P2Genie) to make it possible to capture and log all of your footage for later ingest to Mac.

The external drive will be formatted for P2 (FAT 32), so you should be agnostic there when it comes time to do the import to FCP.

Another option would be using the HVX200 in IEEE 1394 HOST mode or using an OTG USB drive to offload to a hard drive.

If you can't afford to take the camera out of recording mode to offload, consider renting a P2 Store.

The vendors email says Panasonic is telling them the firestore is backordered till the end of Jan.?

Panasonic doesn't make the firestore. Focus Enhancements does. Why is Panasonic telling you about a backordereed item they don't make.

Did the vendor mean p2 store.

Did they mean focus enhancements advised them?

If he didn't mean p2 store why not rent the cards and the p2 store?

You can record directly into Final Cut Pro using the laptop (that is, onto the Lacie). I'd assume this is possible with Final Cut Express

Definitely talking about Firestore FS-100. According to the vendor, Panasonic has
some kind of exclusive deal with Focus Enhancements...but yeah, why did
Panasonic
"advise' them? I'm going to find out.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm going to check them all out .

Wow, I see that B&H are out of stock, too.

....I'm glad I pulled the trigger when I did.... I couldn't afford it at the time....but something told me I'd better grab one...

Exactly. This would solve your problem, at far less cost.

I love it to be full dependent on one brand and one factory that gives me the recording media.~not~ So if the firestore is on hold you can go only P2. Is Panasonic introducing the new P2 cards in the next 2 months?

Focus makes the FS-100, but Panasonic has exclusive marketing rights.

I use a Macbookpro in the field all the time and we always rent a P2 STORE to use as a card reader. Everybody should have those for rent.

What version Final Cut Pro are you using on your MacBookPro and what are the
specs on your MacBookPro? (How is Final Cut Pro on a MacBookPro? Can the
laptop handle it okay?)

Do you load the P2 reader when it's full into an external hard drive via the
MacBookPro using capture in Final Cut Pro? What setting? "Capture now"
or "batch capture"?

Also what kind/size external hard drive are you using? (I'm
guessing that you're not storing on the laptop's hard drive.) Thanks!
