Hi:
I am looking for a wide angle lens for my GH3 that is at least 2.8 or less and which allows me to be in focus from 5 feet to infinity.

I have such a set up with a Canon 60D and a Canon 14mm fisheye Mk2..works very well, I never have to focus provided that I am no closer than 5 feet, but the Canon 60D is noisy in low light. The GH3 is better and doesn't shut down after 12 minutes.

Your 16mm lens on the 60D becomes a 22.6mm with the crop factor. For the GH3, I can recommend the 12-35 2.8. Great lens and comes in at 24mm with the GH3's crop factor. For any given aperture value, your DOF will be deeper than the 60D too.

Any idea what the infocus area would be at 2.8 and at 12mm?

If by that you are asking what the hyperfocal distance is, it's found by the formula ((focal length)^2) / (f-stop)(COC), where COC (circle of confusion) is your preference; you're chance to say where the line is between sharp and not sharp. Most people will pick a value around 0.1mm to 0.05mm. For example, hyperfocal distance might be ((12mm)^2) / (2.8)(0.1mm) = around 514mm, or half a meter. Or ((12mm)^2) / (2.8)(0.05) = around a meter.

How are people changing aperture on the Tokina 11-16? Is an adapter with built in iris the only option as I have heard these are not great and lead to vignetting past f8 or thereabouts.

I regularly use a Tokina 11-16 on my T3i at 16mm. It's a very nice lens, but lately I've been using a 24mm IS lens at f/2.8 It has proven to be my go to lens on the canon crop cams. At 38.4mm equivalent, the IS is mandatory and makes it work incredibly well. The perspective of 30mm - 40mm equivalent is much nicer IMHO. 24mm equivalent gives a very unreal barrel look when in full movement.

On the GH3 or the new G6 I'm getting, I think the 12-35 f/2.8 with IS is going to be the magic combo as it is 1/3rd lighter than my T3i and 24mm IS. The G6 combo with the 12-35mm will give 24-35mm equivalent for stabilizer work with the lightest weight of any DSLR type cam out there at only 1.5 lbs total including battery.

In any case the point is the 12-35mm f/2.8 with IS will be your best bet.

Cheers,
Pete
