What do you do if outside is to bright?

Hi guys,
I have one question for you out there:
Can I combine two ND filters to darken the footage?
If I get a ND 4 and a ND 8 and I combine them together what do I get?

What about ND16 and ND64 instead of the Fader? I feel like 4-8-12 stops should suffice as a decent set of variable NDs. Yes/no?
