What are your thoughts on this rig?

I’d like to take this opportunity to say hello, we just became a proud sponsor of DVX. We believe we have a product that most DSLR and conventional videographers will find useful for a fair price. We are the designers and manufacturers of the gear, all under one roof. We sent 10 demo kits out for review and feedback. As mentioned in the posts Editman has one as does Matt from fresh DV. These two individuals alone have given us a ton of feedback and represent the bulk of the modification we have implemented. Based on this early feedback we have already implemented a slew of tooling modifications, these include the holes up the sides of the uni-strut, adding threaded inserts to the belly pan and a host of other mods. The cage systems are simply the start of a larger group of products we have in the works. We are really excited about our shoulder mount kit. We intend to sell the shoulder kit as being capable of mounting the camera above the rails or below. When under it should allow for a lower center of gravity and what I believe will be a steadier shot. The kit will also come with a set of off-set brackets that will allow for conventional offset mounting of the DSLR unit. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Looks very intriguing.
Any idea of what cost might be?

BTW, you're in my backyard in Maryland.

The other rigs people have mentioned look nice, but I was hoping to get thoughts on the cpmfilmtools rig(s). I was not looking for suggestions for alternatives. Not trying to be a jerk....

Editman, how would you compare the weight and strength to the gini rig?

I think weight/strength ratio is excellent with these cages. It just feels solid to handle.

Not sure on exact cost. Once we get an idea for weight of the parts and cycle times from the molding machines we can get an idea. That said it will be in line with our other gear. Im a firm believer that the rig should not cost more than the camera.

If you’re in our neck of the woods you should swing by, Ship Point Industrial Park, Chesapeake Plastics Mfg.

Which affordable FollowFocus would you suggest to be used with this cage gear ?

Steve, I might take you up on the offer.
I'm in the market for a rails system and follow focus for my new Canon 550D. And your cages and rails look very interesting and definitely affordable.

+1

Please direct me where I can buy your rig, as it looks amazing!

Perry,

I'm guessing you're talking about the cable organizers. They are funky looking. Steve says they'll be available in red too, besides blue and black.

Steve: Let me know if you object to me using your picture.

so, if i order one from them now, it will have holes on the side for mounting things?
I want to use this as a weight plate option, and a way to mount my Zoom H4n and light and weights for steadycam.

From their site: "Designed to fit todays DSLR cameras such as Canon 7D, Panasonic GH1, Nikon D90 and Canon 5D. A strong carbon fiber rail system with carbon compouned polycarbonate componenets round out a kit that allows multiple attachment points for LCD displays, XLR adapters and follow focus systems."

So I guess the struts is "carbon compouned polycarbonate"

They do, go on their webpage, pick one cage in the basket and check the S&H costs. It's about $65 to Finland. Plus the 22% import VAT tax is a killing issue :(

WTF are those blue things on the parts tree????

Washers are for use under the knobs, like all bearing materials dissimilar materials work better in contact. The things that look like eyebrows are snap organizers. They snap onto a standard 15mm rail and allow all the cables and such to be routed from point A to point B. Depending on choice we have black, blue and are getting ready to start molding in red.

CPM, there are those who will doubt the strength of your "plastics". When you release, you should make a "torture test" video and upload it to the usual places including here.

When we put the first Ebay auction up we added a photo of me standing on a rig. I'm 6'4" and just shy of 300 pounds. The picture is me standing on the rig. So far the feedback we have gotten from everyone that has used the rig is thats its extremely strong. But yes, we are working on a video of our first person shooter rig that is basically a person getting knocked around and the camera along with it. We took an idea from the military in how they use shock cable to mount electronics, it works amazingly well.

Sounds great! But a torture test wouldn't be complete until you actually find the breaking point of the unit. I say put some weights in the rig to simulate a real camera+lens and throw the whole thing out of a moving vehicle.
