What are you listening to now ?

The latest interpretation of the "Merry Widow", was staged and streamed December, 31 by l’Opéra Grand Avignon in French, with Erminie Blondel as "Hanna", dialing up her charm all the way to eleven.

And a little encore by Blondel from another Lehar operetta -

My niece posted this one today (a sad song) somewhere else and I found it interesting for lack of a better word a.t.m.

Speed Bag Punchdrumming - Post-Easter warm up (from Joe as well)

//If I can make another drunk post and hate myself even more tomorrow for doing so, because nobody talks about this stuff and ya know, isolation + wine ==
I like Joes Banjo playing particularly because I can understand the melodies and patterns on first listen. As opposed to the 'pros'. Let me expand on that.

I was playing keys in Kitchener Ont once and an older gentleman sat down down behind me just off the stage. Afterwards I sat down with him and he sais something to the effect of "I like your playing. It's simple and like the songs. Others come in here and get all fancy." It was kind of a town where everyone aspired to jazz. Every keyboard player there, and being so close to the Waterloo University, played jazz, as complicated as they could. Once our singer brought one of his friends to the gig, his name was John Lee. Not John Lee Hooker as I first asked him. He started playing piano at 3 yrs old. Jazz player. Very cool and down to earth guy. In one set he asked if he could go up and play a couple tunes on my keys. I said yeah ofcourse. Oh my god. I said to the singer something like "How in the hell am I going to follow that?" You have no idea. After we closed up we hit some parties afterwards blah blah. Great piano player. And just for laughs, when he was improving with the band and then sits back down he starts laughing and sais "I was playing in the wrong key there for a few bars." Believe me, nobody in the bar including me even realized it. He was all over that keyboard.

//Oh yeah. I have to add. When I was walking out the exit door that night there was one guy sitting there by himself by the rear door and he sais out loud, with a mean face "You Suck!" I replied "Thanks". Typical. :) /Oh, and the drummers room had bed bugs. Good times.

-Therapy session over now. Thanks. -Cheers. Love ya.

Well, fine. Make it private. Here's a superior version. With Dagmar Schellenberger and her East German and Rod Gilfry and his Californian German. And they are great together.

In German, as it should be, but with English subtitles.

The visual is of Peter Beczala, who was in 2005 a "young baritone", but went on to become a headliner and Ute Gfrerer (in supporting roles).

June, 26th, 1988, I drove to Long Beach from Hollywood to meet up with a friend and go hunting for the AC/DC tickets. We each got one for $30 but they weren't next to each other. After the show, my friend told me he got hit in a leg by a flare fired during "For Those About to Rock". Some encore.

And one of the great rock shows ever.

I was listening to a singer last night and he had an accent I couldn't place. Turns out it was Russian but it didn't sound Russian. Hard to explain.
He reminded me at times of Gordon Lightfoot whom a buddy I used to drink with in the bars used to play with. All nice words about him.
So, Needless to say...random off YT. Dont' mind? :)

An old set list from my first rock band. Grade 9 High School days. To kill some time at 4am here.
About 1/2 origs and 1/2 covers. We had a rule in our band back then: If you wanted to join you had to write or try writing. It didn't matter if it was good. Lyrics, melodies... anything. They all did. :) I don't know why we made that rule but...it was just what we wanted to do back then.

So a couple songs from that list that we covered. Not Us playing though. Just to reflect back on that time.
(Also we had two temporary girl singers that sang a few songs at a few high schools. Patty had a crowd of fans when she sang at her school I'll tell ya. Her school was pre-High School actually and a Catholic College believe it or not. Weird in hindsight. She and Denise also sang at my High School. They didn't really like us there though hahaha.) They loved her at her school for whatever reason. And I may add that school became our best gig. They always wanted us back. I'll never forget that. They supported us like crazy. We always went back. I may never understand why they were so nice to us. :) -Cheers!) Memories.

Not identical to the original version on the Machine Head - no long Ritchie solo - but still a great take with Ian's vocals and Jon's Hammond-through-the-Marshall-Stacks organ sound.

Oh damn, the soundtrack to my teen years, me and my friends pretty much held Deep Purple as "it" throughout high school. Such a great band.
Highway Star was a jam session in my first, nascent band efforts.

The "Machine Head" was my "first" rock album. I was home with a flu and asked dad to ask my cousin Slava for a tape to borrow. He was going over to his sister's (my aunt's) anyway. Dad complied and returned home with an open reel - the Soviets didn't buy the license to the Phillips cassette for a long time, while the open reel technology was taken from the Germans, the inventors of the Magnetophon, after WWII and became the sole option for home recording for many a year - of the "Machine Head" on one side and T.Rex's "Electric Warrior" on another. I was barely in my teens.

Deep Purple was huge in the former USSR. Even Vladimir Putin called them his favorite band and they made a pretty decent living traveling around Eastern Europe after the breakup of the Soviet Union. Back in 1997, they were playing at the House of Blues on Sunset. I wanted to go but it was sold out and I didn't feel like paying the scalper fees. Then I found out that Blackmore was fired and replaced by Steve Morse - and that happened in 1993! - and lost all interest in seeing them live.

Yes, Blackmore is a nut case but I hate Morse's playing and his sound. Joe Satriani replaced Blackmore for one tour but couldn't stay permanently. Then Jon Lord quit (Jon died in 2012). The band kept touring until recently though and put out a bunch of concert videos out. Ian Paice aside, the tribute bands sound better.
