My parents used to listen to super hits of the 70s (have a nice day) and every now and then the melodies come bubbling up through my unconscious, such as billy dont be a hero
I love that last line, "I heard she threw the letter...a-waaaay..."
I feel like the emotion and implications are much stronger for all that is unspoken and left to the imagination. Her anger, the scene of her bawling and pounding her mother's chest, etc. Everything is so explicit today
It's kind of an enduring anti-war song despite being so normie and poppy. A far cry from country joe and the fish ("and it's 1, 2, 3, what are we fighting for? Dont ask me, I dont give a damn. Next stop is Vietnam...")
It's got me thinking about how influential the vietnam war and the draft were for baby boomers...
