What are the lens-mount plans?

Hi all.

With the recent discussion about total-package prices and whatnot, some people mentioned that they're planning to use still lenses right off the bat.

But that assumes that someone is going to have these mounts available when the Red is released. On what is this assumption based? The Red guys have stated that the mount assembly is designed to be modular, but did I miss the part where they said they'd be making various mounts (rather than simply making it possible for someone else to make them)?

With the emphasis on getting the camera and the two Red lenses out the door, I'm wondering whether making lens adapters is a priority and whether those adapters are going to be for sale when the camera goes on sale. Otherwise, those hoping to use them are going to have an expensive conversation piece sitting around until someone starts machining those things!

That is my concern as well; I'm planning on using my nikon lenses at least until the zoom ships. I could rent lenses, but here in Hawaii they have to be shipped from LA.(very expensive and impractical) That would definately slow me down.

Mounts are interchangeable by the shooter. B4 will be late in release. PL, Nikon and Canon manual are 1st.

Red are working on many things the mounts are just another aspect for red to deal with. It does not stop other third party groups from making their own mount once the camera is tied down to specs etc. I will settle for the mounts that red make before other makers though, but it is up to others to decide.

I am more concerned with what else will be required other than a follow focus and suitable gearing along with a matte box when using still lenses. What other conversions are needed. Some still lenses may have additional difficulties to convert but what about the nikkon manual focus that gibby and greg speak off among others?

Here is your answer (already re-posted before):

«Over time we expect to offer many lens mounts. But in the beginning, expect PL, Nikon and Canon manual. We are fully supportive of 3rd parties beating us to the punch in offering other mounts. By the fall of 2007, our hope is that there will be a mount for almost any lens that makes sense.» in Jim Jannard's own words.

Hi,
The red body that will ship in early 2007 includes the PL mount right?
Which means I can rent any 35mm lens or 16mm lens and plug it straight on the camera or do I need to acquire/rent a seperate mount before I can do so?

It means you can rent any 35mm or 16mm PL lens, yes. :-)

You need to make sure the lenses you buy/rent have the proper lens mount to be compatible with the camera. That being said, the RED lens mount is interchangable, and they've announced support for many popular lens mounts.

The RED ONE ships with a PL mount. Others will become available at an additional cost. We will try to keep lens mounts priced to enable our customers to afford to shoot the lenses thay have, although there is a price to pay in convenience when using a Nikon or Canon manual still lens in that the focus throw is short on many of them. 3rd parties will undoubtedly make follow focus units to accommodate for these lenses.

Jim

Regarding those 3rd parties; will you publically release the measurements for the camera and cages so that 3rd parties can make products for the camera as it becomes available or will they have to register with RED to become 3rd party developers for a fee?

"3rd parties will undoubtedly make follow focus units to accommodate these lenses."

hummmm never considered that one before ...
they (3rd party) already make a reversing gear for the nikors then it seems they could make gearing to expand the distance between focus marks - so if on the lens barrel it is only 1/8 " distance between 10ft-20ft the gearing could be made so it's 1/2 " between 10-20ft on the follow focus unit !!

You're welcome Dan!

Can we expect some goodies from you as 3rd party regarding this:

I know what I read from your PM but I'm thinking here is our request! Well, you know... Now we just can('t) wait! :)

EDIT -- You will have a lot of customers, RED ones -- that's for sure!

Thanks for the answer. Will rent lenses for my next feature till the zoom lense arrive.

I wish I could tell you more, but the whole business side of my "toys" lyes in Mr. Dearinger's hands and he is not feeling very well these days. Why not call him and wish him a fast(er) recovery and your wishes will start materializing sooner. Concepts on stand by here.

PS. I designed and built my first wireless FF/zoom in 1994 as an accessory to a pan/tilt remote head (designed and built in '94 as well)

will the nikon/canon lens mounts be avaiable at the time of shipping?

Im putting all my earnings out on this camera but I couldnt afford PL lenses. Im counting on using still camera lenses as soon as I get one

I'm with Darkline, please make it easy to switch lens mounts, quicker the better and have them available when the camera ships.

If not how much and is it possible to have a nikon lense switched over to a PL mount? Who would I call in Hollywood to do it?

My understanding is that adapting Nikon lenses to PL requires major surgery. If that's the case, doing a couple of Nikon lenses as one-off conversions would probably cost more than buying a set of used PL primes.

I'd love for someone to tell me I'm wrong about this. We also intend to use Nikon lenses while waiting for the RED zoom, and if there isn't a Nikon mount available when we get the camera, and there isn't a way to adapt the Nikons to PL, we're going to have to run up some nasty rental fees for PL lenses....

They've said they plan to have the Nikon mount available around the same time as the camera. Perhaps not the same day, but they're both slated for Q1 2007, so you never know. I would think that would be a much nicer solution than trying to modify your lenses or mounts.

I'm with Greg, I hope switching of mounts is quick and easy, while still maintaining stability and rigidity. RED hasn't let me down in any area yet though, so I'm not worried. I think as far as speculating on mounts and such, we might as well wait a few months as we probably won't have any more tangible data until then - and I'm sure the whole team is doing everything they can to make every area of the camera the best it can be.
