We're under attack!!!!! Sony NEX-7, A77, A65, NEX5N

Well, it does kind of look obscure (in comparison to how the larger DSLRs look on rigs, they kind of fill them up a bit more). Take the viewfinder away and maybe you'll know what I'm talking about. Obviously it functions fantastically and that's all that matters, but these Sony's are so thin and small that even the lenses look strange on them (like some sort of lens cap). Like I said, it's the functionality that matters (which seems top-notch, for the price obviously), but it will take some getting used to.

Faux Pro will be perfect for the NEX-5N. That's what I'm going to do. I just received parts from China, gonna make a batch of 10. It will be a couple of weeks + the time it takes me to get the NEX-5N (so I can custom fit the plate). I updated the rig so its more compact....anywho. :)

I like that it's nice and compact, but how well do you think it will be able to stabilize when you only have one hand on a handle and the other on the lens to focus. It looks like it's perfect for the HX9V because you do not need one hand on the lens. I've been thinking about doing something with my Zacuto Point and Shoot handle, but I run into the same problem that I need one hand on the lens to focus.

These little Sony's are going to look so obscure on rigs, "Is that a phone with a fixed focal lens attached? - No it's a camera"

Hmmm.....interesting. Does this look obscure? (It's OK if you think it does....I'm just asking) This is the HX9 on an early version of the FAUX PRO. The people I showed thought it looked wicked. And it worked great! What do you say?

I'm very excited about how the NEX5N is going to look on the latest version. Early feedback from other parties is the same. (Opinions will vary like always which is fine.)

I can say that even without a rig my camera looks pretty ridiculous with this tiny body and a gigantic lens on it. Like most of you, I could care less how it looks as long as the image is nice and it handles well. It's pretty funny to look at though.

I like your little Faux Pro rig. the side and top handles are really quite functional. Have you found an inexpensive loupe that will work with the tilting screen on the 5n, and easily removable or flipable to access the touch screen.

Fair enough. You can never fault an honest response. :) I agree that functionality is what matters most.

Yes, the HX9 is perfect on the camera stabilizer. It's auto focus is great. We'll see how the NEX5N auto focus handles being on the steadi and having to auto focus. (I won't mess with manual focus in this scenario.)

panasonic gf series, this couldve been you... i wonder when will panasonic consumer will get their head out of their asses and just make all cameras have 24p

I KNOW RIGHT? I still have my GF13, though.

Glad you like it! It's pretty wicked I tell ya. Better than I could have hoped for! (Especially for the cost) I will be hunting for a loup for sure. I think (no, I hope) the NEX5 body and bottom screw/mount are in the same position. This is the one I'm hoping for:

would actually prefer this type: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004HD3G6Q/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=otcsolo-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=B004HD3G6Q

ut I'm not sure they have the bottom mount part. Anywho....thanks one and all for your input. I'll likely post more up to date pics on the FAUX PRO later this weekend?

I'm not making a definative statement here, so no one have a hernia over this, OK? :)

It appears (from the scarce footage that I've watched so far), that the NEX-5N is NOT the "next generation". I appears that it is "current generation" imaging in a MUCH SMALLER package.... Here's some footage below. I see some nice images. I see some not so nice images. I don't see anything that the GH2 can't do. (The GH2 is no slouch I know.) I'm just as excited today as I was yesterday, but MY MOTIVATION is "pocketable". So...a T2i in my pocket sounds GREAT to me!!! (The sharpness looks better than the T2i IMHO...) Anywho....interesting stuff. I can't WAIT to get mine! Cheers!

I shot with the NEX5N excessively today. I'm still trying out different ways to stabilize the camera while still taking advantage of it's small size, and I used Zacuto's Target Shooter today and that seemed to be a pretty good solution. I haven't watched the footage back yet, but if it's nice and stable, I may stick with this as my solution.

I did today for the first time have a couple over heating problems. A few times it would give me a warning and other times it would just shut down. I wasn't happy about that. This was inside an air condition's room with no professional lighting.

Overall though, I am still liking the camera. I really love the size, I just hope the overheating issue gets solved.

You have a pre-production model or are you talking about firmware update?

What size is the matte box of the faux pro rig? Seems relatively huge..getting into Victrola or old hearing aid territory.

Hoping for a firmware update.

Also, is anyone else having trouble screwing in tropid plates into the camera? I've tried multiple different plates and none of them screw in all the way. It will get as tight as it possibly can but I can still move the plate with ease. I feel like maybe the mounting hole is shorted on the NEX5N than other cameras.

re: mounting hole: it wouldn't be the first time I see a mounting hole that's too short, but all previous instances were on $10 chinese accessories... anyway, if you're adapting lenses, an adapter with a mounting plate is the best route, as it also provides better balance and reduces stress in the camera mount

Yea that might be the route I have to take. Anyone have any suggestions for a good Nikon to NEX adapter with a mounting plate? Also is anyone else having this problem, or is it possible that I have a faulty camera?

On another note, I am watching back my footage from yesterday and I can not believe how clean this camera is at 3200. And the noise that is there is very pleasing. It's very tightly packed and small.

Yup, sometimes even from apparently reliable sources too.

Someone has posted @cinema5D a comparison between a 5D2 and a NEX5N. The NEX5N at 3200 looks better, so its good to see another posting a positive result at 3200

LOL! :)

I'll see if I can find some dimensions for you. (AKA, I'll measure it)
Funny you say that though, because I'm likely going to do a smaller version. (I already have, but I like some aspects of this one better.)
The main thing about THIS matte box is that it allows for 24mm wide (after calculations...so TRUE 24mm) usage WITHOUT zooming. I suspect that a smaller version will NOT allow for that. :(

We'll see though....back to my mad scientist lab!!! :)

I've been playing with my NEX-5N for a couple of hours and so far I'm blown away by it. It's all I expected and more. I got it as a b-cam for my 5D but it could end up being the other way around! I'll post a full review and a little film in a few days after I've figured out how to get the most out of it.

High ISO performance is very good. This thing blows the APS-C Canons and the GH2 away in low light. And is on par with or better than the 5D! High ISO noise reduction is always on in video mode and isn't adjustable but it doesn't seem to soften things too much at 1600 and 3200 ISO. There's also a 1/25 shutter if you desperately need another stop.

The usability is as good if not better than a Canon DSLR once you do a custom setup and assign controls to ISO, white balance, and picture profiles. I'll go through the details when I do the full review. I 'm using the Sony EVF which has metering with my manual Leica primes.

As for the overheating, mine hasn't but it does get warm. I think people are having overheating issues with the LCD in its parked flush position. Unlatch the LCD so it's not up against and cooking the sensor and see how that goes.

It would be nice to see the APS-C Sonys get a home at DVXuser, hint, hint. :love4:

I had over heating problems with the LCD detached. Could you do me a favor? Can you try attaching a tripod plate or gorilla plate to your NEX5n and see if you can get it to a point where the plate is no longer able to move left and right. I'd like to know if I received a faulty camera or if this is just a problem with the NEX5n.

Just tried a really right stuff plate, no problem. Sounds like the thread has been stripped, return it. I recommend attaching via the lens adapter because the camera body is so tiny. I'm using this one for EOS mount which seems pretty good- http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/23066294...NX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#ht_3116wt_944 You should be able to find similar adapters for just about every lens mount.
