yes that happens in all cameras.Just got my 5N, before stocks run short after the floods.
One thing I have noticed is that the camera undercranks. If you set the shutter speed to a low value the frame rate also drops. I haven't done exact science tests but it looks like 1/4 sec drops the frame rate to 4P etc
How can this be even possible?? I don't understand... Most fascinating! Any explanation of this phenomenon??One thing I have noticed is that the camera undercranks. Ok
I analysed some clip shot at 1/4 sec shutter speed. On the timeline I see six frames the same followed by six the same but 1/4 sec later ( 6 frames) and so on.
It appears that the frame rate is set to the shutter speed when you go below 1/25 sec.
I'm still really pissed about the Sony NEX sound click issue but in retrospect, it is probably not as big a deal as I thought it would be. I was shooting a student project today with the new Canon XA10. Link: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=749467&Q=&is=REG&A=details
My school just bought fifteen of these cameras at $2000 a pop for the TV station and I noticed that the camera had a clicking noise which sounded very close to the sound described on the NEX. The sound was like a little bb rattling around inside the body put it was isolated, as if the bb was inside a little box which allowed it to move around ever so slightly. Rotating the camera left and right, up and down and dutch rolls produced an audible click to my ear. When I listened to the audio from the onboard mic, it was EXACTLY like the click sound in the NEX videos. I went up to the equipment room and looked at the other bodies and they all had the click, all fifteen of them. This was not the image stabilization because that produced a separate clunk sound which only happened if the camera was tilted forward or backward.
How many cameras have this problem? I don't think anyone cares about the Canon click because it has 2 XLR inputs and we use shotguns and lavs for our recording so I never shows up in the audio.
Now the NEX click could be way louder to the ear than on the Canon but if it is the same, there won't be any issues if you are using an external recorder with lavs and boom mics. I think I will still move ahead with the NEX. I always use monopods, tripods and shoulder mounts so I don't think it will really be an issue and I already decided to pick up a zoom recorder so I think I will be fine until the next hot mirrorless cam comes along.
Nice work HHL. You pre-order your Scarlet yet?
I'm DPing a web-series and was originally going to shoot it on the 5D until I discovered right before the first shot that the mirror in my camera broke. Luckily I had my NEX-5N with me for some slow motion stuff, and I ended up using it for the whole thing. The director is in love with the footage and I'm pretty happy with it myself. I'll post some footage at some point.
