Weird colors in the blur?

Hey guys, this happens on my 50mm 1.8 most of all, but it also happens in slight amounts on my other lenses, but anyway basically, with my camera, every time I focus things, I notice that if an object is slightly out of focus, it has a green or red halo around it, the color depending in which direction its out of focus. It seems to go away in the live view if the object is perfectly in focus, but the problem is that then, the objects around it (like in a macro shot) have the weird halos. A bigger problem is that sometimes, while the object in focus may look perfect in the live view once the focus is perfect, it even is to the point that the object will still have the halo around it once I play the video back. Now, turning the apeture to like 5.6 seems to help a bit, but doesn't totally solve it (plus I bought my 1.8 lens for a reason). I just wonder what's going on? Is this just an optical problem with lenses? Or is the color system in my camera messed up? As I said, the halos are always either weirdly green or red, depending on which latitude the focus is.

P.S. I've made the mistake of banging my camera up bigtime a couple times before, especially the mistake of accidentally letting go of the tripod head control, while it's positioning is loose, and the camera swings foward and the lens bangs up against the leg really hard. My tripod has even fell over on hard wood floor and banged the camera all up. Realistically, I don't think these accidents caused anything (and don't blame me, most of the time it was because I was being attacked by wasps and had a fit!) but I just want to make sure. With how sensitive the sensors are on the T2i (with how a bug could land on the camera and cause a huge shake in video mode) I would suspect it wouldn't take much to destroy the sensor, and my camera accidents have been a little severe.

There's an example of the red halo around the blurred object on that test video I did. Usually, the halo effect will even cause problems on the clarity of the focused object, but in this scenario, the toothpaste's bottle letters are surprisingly clear (I think the apeture was like 4.0 though, so that may be why.)
