weddings

Hello all,
I've seen the difference between the frame rates and I wonder, how come weddings and other special occasions are never filmed in the 24f (p) option? It gives a cool film look to the occasion. I always see that wedding videos are in reality tv frame rate, 50i, I think. When the cameran man has the option of a 24f switch, why dont they ever advertise it to potential clients for their special day?

More than likely because in weddings a lot of Slow motion is used and Interlace does slow motion much better. I would also think it has less strobing and I believe works better in Low Light

The low light thing doesnt make any sense but everything else silverwolf mentioned is accurate. Also another reason most people dont shoot 24f for weddings is just because people believe certain frame rates are ment for certain applications and shoudlnt be intertwined. My feeling about it is that if you want to recreate a news feel than of course shoot 60i but i dont think 24f or p needs to be saved simply for filmaking. The idea that progressive gives a more fantasy feel to a video is nothing more than what we are used to from watching films and news are whole lives. When i shoot an event that is supposed to be a special occasion for someone I will almost always shoot progressive now (even 24p most of the time) because it looks more special to the client. They equate it with quality and who am I to disagree with that :) . Strobing isnt really an issue if you know how to aviod it and i shoot 60i if I know there is just going to be a slow motion scene in the final edit (a picture taking or getting ready sequence for example) Until the whole progressive = quality idea wears off of people as more and more progressive modes become available on cameras and used in regular reality type shows you might as well give the client what will make them happy. Sorry if not everything i said is clear i wrote this in a rush....

Oh yeah and also with a camera like the xlh1 you might want to consider shooting in interlaced and doing a 24p conversion in post because you have so much resolution to work with and the 24f isnt a "true" progressive in the first place. (even though it is very convincing maybe better than a 24p conversion in post) This way you will have two edits to show your client and let them determine whihc they lke better.

Graeme Nattress has done 60i to 24p conversions and, I believe, has said the results are comparable to the camera's native 24F mode. So you might as well save all that render time and shoot 24F.

Mr. Nattress, please correct me if I'm wrong or misquoting you.

I think what SilverWolf is saying is that 60i is better in low light than 24p. Which is true.

It is? Can someone explain this concept to me..I have never heard this and logically it doesnt seem like it should make a diffrence. If anything I would assume the opposite since the "proper" shutter speed for 24p is 1/48th and the "proper" shutter speed for 60i is 1/60th.

I dont think weddings are shot in 24p and advertised that we can shoot in 24p simply cuz ppl who hire us to shoot their wedding dont even know what 24p is to begin with. all they know about a camera is what the walmart salesperson tells them.

very true bilgami. My thinking about it is that if they are going to think 24p makes it look like its higher quality dont tell them just shoot it and they wil be that much more impressed

Let the Bride Decide

Let the Bride Decide

Instead of assuming the bride will like the look of 24p on video (with it's strobing issue and whatnot), why not have a demo DVD demonstrating the difference? Also...why not show her different looks (camera settings) that are possible. Think of it as a cinematographer-director relation...choosing film stock and whatnot.

a consumer will be less receptive to issues like strobing showing them the diffrence between two videos might not be wise since they dont truly have developed eye fo these things
