Wedding- Quick Audio Questions

Hey guys, I am shooting a wedding on Thursday and need some quick expert advice. My job will be mainly to walk around and interview the guests.

1. How good is the XH-A1 onboard mic for this?
2. Should I use my Rode's Videomic instead?
3. I think I know the answer to this last one already, but.... Will I get the best audio from just connecting a Sure SM57 dynamic mic to the XLR port on the XH-A1

I would run some tests myself but don't really have the time anymore. Got some previous jobs before that :-(

Thanks in advance

Like all on board mic, it sucks. It's an omni pattern so all the surrounding noised will be picked up equally and then your client is going to wonder why the audio sounds like something their uncle recorded.

2. Should I use my Rode's Videomic instead?

Yes, get a mini-jack to XLR adapter. The Rode is more directional and camera mounted will be much better.

If they are your only options I agree with Jade. Try to shoot wide and get as close to the people who are talking as possible. Make sure you get them to stand / sit well away from walls where possible. Will just give a better image.
