WB Presets Don't Stay Locked Per Canon Rep

Went to a Canon A1 seminar given by a Canon rep who operates out of the corporate office in Irvine and he stated that the two white balance presets of 3200K and 5600K actually will not stay set and will make automatic color adjustments based on the light changes in a scene.

So, if you are preset for 3200k in a room that has tungsten and you pan around past a window which has sun light light coming in it is going to adjust to some degree to compensate for what it thinks is too blue and then as you keep panning or following your subject back to a part of the room that is tungsten it is going to make that light look very orange until it can come back and adjust itself. Why have a preset, and then make it "auto adjust"?

I can't verify this since I don't have one yet (until I sell the DVX100B) but I found this weird.

The DVX presets have performed for me flawlessly. Especially outside. The 5600 setting seems to be right on no matter if overcast or bright sunlight. I know of a camera operator who shoots several reality series with the DVX and he said he almost never white balances and just uses presets.

Don't like the idea of the preset WB changing on its own and adjusting color temp in the middle of a shot and not being able to lock it.

Sometimes, like Doc work, you just can't do a manual white balance and you and need to rely on a steady present that won't "hunt".

Anybody notice this?

no, i just tried a little test and found nothing of the sort.

I'm glad to hear that. Could be that the scenario that triggers this is more severe. The Canon rep was very clear about the point, but maybe he was talking in terms of something that would only be seen under the most radical changes. He did not say under which circumstances it would happen other that the system was designed to change on its own even when in preset.

I've not seen anybody else mention it here.

I went to a presentation/workshop from Canon before I bought mine - honestly, they really haven't a clue half the time! I can safely say that most people on this board and other similar ones are way more knowledgeable...

ditto on that.

reps, often enough, having worked with MANY, read the books, study the stuff, but their hands on experience is close to none. i dont trust what they say, i trust those who use the toys.

That Canon rep is a little clueless it seems. He got his facts wrong on Pany tapes being wet lube - WRONG.

The presets dont hunt at all they stay fixed.
