This is freaking scary. You would think these towers would be designed better for the climber.
Maybe a full climb surrounded by an outer cage would be safer?

With a portion of the top length retracting down a certain distance, within the cage.

Couldn't pay me enough to do that job. :)

Exactly what I was thinking. There was one part where he had to sling himself over a lip, and he wasn't harnessed to anything, AND he was feeling around for something to grab onto.

I say dig a deep hole, build the tower telescoping, and when you need to get to the top, you lower the tower and bring the top to you!

That, or at least give these guys parachutes! I wonder how often they have to go up there.

What happens if they drop a penny?

Hey, didn't any of you guys see Peter Jackson's King Kong? There's nothing the slightest bit dangerous, windy, cold, or scary about standing freely on a tiny little tower more than a thousand feet above the ground. And that's in the middle of winter.

Those guys must be ignoring multiple safety regulations, because I cannot believe that their employers wouldn't demand that they have a safety line connected to the tower at all times.

I mean what would it take to have a safety line running up each length of the tower, or safety nets extending out around several layers of the tower?

why did they put the electrical box at the top?

...other than the fact that the resulting video would be far less interesting.

2000ft of cable, while likely to have been expensive, could have prevented the need for a human to scale that tower....that's all i'm saying.

Remember, technicians don't design things, engineers design things (why they don't stick to trains I'll never understand).
