C200: Warning: The Lexar USB3 Cfast reader may have just corrupted my first RAW shoot.

Man, EgoDisk wasn't kidding. Just testing MP4 vs RAW and had some strange behavior (not recognizing the updated CRM file) and now have an unreadable 262kb CRM file on my CFast card. Ordered a Sandisk card reader, which I'll pick up from B&H tomorrow. Was using a 256GB Lexar 3500x card BTW...

Was this the Lexar CR2 reader?

Hmm...I have the Lexar CR2 reader and so far, no issues. But I have not shot a lot of RAW yet, just a couple of cards worth of test shots in the office. I would hate to shoot something important and have the card reader corrupt the data. Wish someone else was making a CFast 2.0 Card Reader that still used the Thunderbolt 2 connector. Every other CFast 2.0 reader seems to use either Thunderbolt 3 or USB 3.0 only. My laptop is old and doesn't have a Thunderbolt 3 connection (Apple makes a convertor but it doesn't pass bus power so it's useless for my situation) and it doesn't have USB 3.0 either, just USB 2.0. Trying like heck to avoid buying a new laptop just to download Cinema RAW Light in the field. I have the Sandisk CFast Card reader here in the edit bay and this iMac has USB 3.0. Just means that if I send back the Lexar, I will only be able to download RAW in the edit bay, not out on shoots or when traveling. Stupid ever evolving input protocols! ;-)

egodisk is going to release their own version of card reader soon, maybe that will be more stable. however fhammond did tell me the CR1 reader was working fine with rawlite... did you say that you were using 3500 lexar cards and your CR1 corrupted the files? so you were not using an egodisk card right? sorry didn't quite catch what you mean!

hey puredrift i am curious, the audio switches right by the C200 body, which one do you flip to get your audio? or do you enable scratch via the menu? also are you still able to get any audio during 120p and 60p recording?

Yes, that's right. Lexar 3500x card and Lexar CR1 reader.

To switch to internal is menu only (bummer), miss that from the C100. Audio records in 60p but not 120 fps

Today I unplug the Card reader without ejecting from my Hackingtosh so I'm not sure if the was the problem.

I Recorded 3 Videos in total: 1 RAW and 2x 4K to the SD cards

Now I have 4 CRM files in the CFAST and 2 MP4s. I think one of the CRM Should be the RAW Video file 588MB but the other 3 262kb CRM's not sure where they came from.

Issue may be the camera when switching from RAW to SD 8bits.

Hmm...you used the word Hackintosh. To me, all bets are off when you are using Apple software on a hacked computer. Many have reported good results with Hackintoshes but many others have reported various drive, RAM, hardware issues too over the years, that's why I have never pieced one together even though I have been tempted many times because of the specs you can build so cheaply. But I could never use one for client work, it would only be an expensive toy for me so I keep on buying expensive Macs. Also, failing to eject before removing the media from the reader is never good, that could corrupt any media on any computer.

Never ever had an issue with this on a windows computer.
anyone else did??

Perhaps Windows is different but this has happened to me several times on Macs and sometimes with PITA results where the data header becomes corrupt and the drive cannot be opened. I've used Disk Warrior to repair it, sometimes with success, other times, not so much. For some reason, my Atomos Blade drive reader does this often, especially on my iMac, I will plug in the reader, a drive, be viewing clips off of the drive and all of a sudden, the drive will eject itself, then give me the warning that I didn't eject the drive and contents could be damaged.

had that issue with the blade reader on windows as well where computer looses connection with the reader, however never did the disk get corrupted.

I do often get warnings in windows with usb sticks from clients (most of them using macs) which warns that the disk may be corrupted and needs to be scanned and fixed, after that the stick will work just fine.
In windows there is a option to safely remove a usb device but there is no obligation to do so(no warning like in ios)

In windows you have 2 options:
1: quick removal(standard activated option) windows doesn't use write cashing, no need to use " safely remove hardware function" just pull usb's to your harts content.
2: write cashing makes things faster however with risks attached and the need to use " safely remove hardware function" or in mac language "eject"

I wonder if there is a option to turn that cashing thing off in macs ios.

If your Macbook Pro has Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 give this a try. It worked like a charm on my Macbook Pro and it also supplies power to the USB3 port.

This is intriguing, I never knew such a convertor existed. This could make life a lot simpler, thanks Gary! i just have to figure out if my Thunderbolt drive, which has two ports, will loop this through to the laptop since the laptop only has a single Thunderbolt connection. Worth a try though.

I had two occasions with a Lexar reader connected to a Mac with corrupted files as a result. It could have been really bad but somehow I got enough uncorrupted files to work with. But it was scary.

I went ahead and got he Sandisk reader. I actually like the size better (smaller) and that it uses the same USB3 connector that most portable hard drives do. I couldn't recover the footage, but this just shows the importance of testing any new gear heavily before doing anything real.

Maybe I will return the Lexar reder back to B&H? Too many people, Egodisk recommends against using it and now multiple users here are having corruption issues, that's no bueno. I bought the Sandisk USB 3.0 reader at the same time so I already have it sitting here. I just need to order the adapter that Gary linked to from B&H and hope that it all works with my set up.

there are two different CR1 readers for lexar, one is USB3 and one is for thunderbolt, according to fhammond, he hasn't had any problems using the CR1 lexar USB3 reader with his egodisk, so what cfast card are you using and is it a one time incident or has this been happening regularly?

I was using that exact reader: Lexar CR1 USB 3.0. Was using a Lexar 256GB 3500x card with it.

Glad fhammond hasn't run into trouble (yet), but I wouldn't trust it. The Sandisk reader is only $46, which is nothing to pay for peace of mind IMO...
